The family and I (myself, partner, sixteen year old and five year old) are going to France with our trailer tent in two weeks time and this will be the first time we have gone without booking a site in advance!
Can anyone recommend a municipal campsite near a lake, preferably in the south of France. We are going for two weeks and would prefer to be based on a single site to avoid having to take down the trailer tent and have a 'base' for the two weeks. Thank you.

We've stayed at the lac du Salagou a couple of times. It is very busy but not expensive.

Try Camping Le Teday. Its on Lac Lacanau. Still my favourite site in France. Its 30 miles west of Bordeaux.

Not municipal but Huttopia Lac De Carcans on west coast is 200m from largest fresh water lake in France and has a lovely sandy beach and set amongst the pine trees.

Whether you will get a two week pitch without booking in peak season however I don't know

Why a lake? For boating, fishing, or swimming? Would a riverside site suit instead?

Lac Lacanua - Le Tedey. Beautiful, calm on the edge of a forest....stunning location. This is the training location for the National Triathlon and is home to Kayak , windsurfers, swimmers. It has a lot to offer. We have been about 8 times now, but you have to want it to be flat. We go to Annecy for lakes and mountains, and the Ardeche for rivers.

We myself, hubby and 17 year old daughter are heading to Le Tedey.. Roll on late August..just a quick question for those who know this site are there plentiful water taps or are they fully serviced pitches.?

Water taps between about 3 pitches. Grey water on the trees and bushes.

Late August is the perfect time for Le Tedey, the pitches start to empty and you can pick and choose where you want to be. If you have water sports kit and want to be near the beach, you can ask for pitches 5 - 19. These are to the left once you have gone through the barrier. This area is much more open and airey too. The area to the right is where the cabins and the childrens play area.     

There is a SUPER U in Moutchic with fuel just in case you were wondering about local facilities. Apart from this there is Lacanau Ocean for places to eat. We alway try and get a table at La Cabane (Ave De Gen Le Clerc)..it snot along the front but worth finding.
