There is a nice little site at Savigny les Beaune not far off the motorway for your halfway stop. Its called les premier pres. Look on the reviews on this site. Its in a lovely position in the vinyards. Beaune is worth a look too as is Dijon. Sorry cant help with Auvergne. J x

Last year we based ourselves at the lovely little municipal site at St Pourcain sur Sioule (see review on here). About 20 mins to Vichy, an hour and a bit to Puy de Dome. Loved the area and great campsite location set in parkland in the small town, with all amenities on the doorstep (including the local wine co-operative next door).

We loved this site Colombier in the hills above Chatel-Guyon (which is 10km from Riom). It is very firmly in the country and has an auberge / inn attached for genuine French country cooking. Les than 15 euro per night. Owner doesn't speak a word of English.

Lac Chambon, near Murol, is stunningly beautiful and in the centre of the Auvergne. We stayed at St Nectaire, but there are two sites on the lake itself - this is one. Puy de Sancy and Besse are nearby; and Mont Dore (that got translated in our family to Mordor) just over the mountain.
It's real mountain country - temperatures were on the cool side, especially after being in the Med. Have a great holiday!

The municipal campsite in Beaune is nice. We're tent campers and it really focusses on motorhomes and caravans. But it's very efficient, run by a bunch of middle aged ladies, is right by the very pretty town, has a proper restaurant on site and a well stocked Leclerc supermarket round the corner.
In the Auvergne we stayed at Camping Les Domes, close to the Puy de Dome. Nice little enclosed pool, facilities clean but a little old, lovely, fantastic campsite owner who has even made little handwritten itineraries of all the tourist routes round the volcanoes that you can borrow. Clermont Ferrand is a nice little city too.
Can get cold at night.

What route did you take to this campsite? Although we loved St. Pourcain I'm looking at this site for later this summer (closer to the Puy de Dome/Vulcania/ Clermont Ferrand etc) but the local roads don't seem great when towing a caravan.

We got back on Tuesday from 8 nights at camping Champ de la Chappelle,
http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=6290 lovely site, owners, and area. Had a great time, loads to do nearby. It is about an hour further down to Puy de Dome, which we did as a day out.

Can't remember exactly, we came from the Clermont Ferrand side i.e. the A75. We left in the other direction towards Pontgibaud. We're tent campers, so we wouldn't necessarily have noticed but the roads in and out did't seem unduly narrow or winding.

I can second Paul + Julie with Savigny. The site is now called Le Premier Pres (it used to be the municipal, now private). We have been going to this gem for 14yrs now. A brilliant stop over.
Auvergne - I can recommend a fab site that we stumbled over on the way to somewhere else, as one often does.
The town is Chatel-Guyon and the site is on the north side of town....the views are fabulous from the site.
Camping De La Croze, Route de Mozac, 63140 Châtel- Guyon. It is NOT all singing and all dancing but it is a GEM. The facilities are clean, there is a dipping pool.
Also don't miss the 'panoramique' train journey up the Puys De Dome. We walked back down the track to the car park...beautiful easy walk and in such a fabulous landscape.

Favourite site:
Camping Nanzel, Limone, Lake
Garda..perfect for MTB, Kayak, SUP and fell running training.
Favourite areas: Provence, French Alps, Savigny (as a stop over for Southern France: Rhein valley as a stop over for Italy. 78
