We're looking to go to Alaska. This is the very start of our research and planning. Just wondering if anyone else been and has any recommendations or areas, trips, companies, transport, accommodation etc?

We know it's pricey but debating to go independently rather than book a tailored package and whether this is doable or would save any money?

Any tips gratefully received. Thinking sept for min 2 weeks so we gotta plan quick. Looking for mix of culture and wildlife, prob not a tent but consider self drive, b&b, rv, cruise, ferry and train. Would love to see northern lights, and poss go up to artic circle.

Thanks in advance guys.

We have done an Alaska cruise.A week to/from Vancouver.
Fabulous,Vancouver is great we stopped for a couple of nights and added a couple on Vancouver Island.
White Horse railway from Skagway is brilliant.
Cruises run in summer only about April to September.
Summers can be hot but it rains a fair bit.
Definitely recommend it.
We are considering another cruise and land trip afterwards next year.

I think OP is going overland. We did the cruise thing too (then Rockie Mountaineer & Calgary Stampede - if you're doing a bucket list, fill that bucket to the brim).
There are ferries along the coast. I wouldn't tent as bears are a real issue. As we were told - if it's brown, lie down. If it's black, shout back. If it's grizzly, don't worry because it will have eaten you. I bought bear bells out there: you carry them when you're walking as the bears can hear you & get away.
I wouldn't bother trying to go Independantly - with a good adventure travel company, in a small group, you'll get so much more out of it as they know where to go to see wildlife, or can tell you so much more about the astonishing culture of the various Indian tribes. Check out the website for Explore! (that's Explore exclamation mark) travel - we can recommend them. But .... They only run June to August. .
I also wonder if September is too early for good Aurora Borealis (which you can see on Hurtigruten trips up the coast of Norway - guaranteed or you get another cruise).
Hope your plans work out well!

Hi,

My husband is from Alaska and I lived there for 10 years, what part of Alaska are you thinking of visiting? Camping is very different there but a lot of fun and its ok to tent it you just need to be aware of your surroundings and make sure all your food is stored away. To see the Northern Lights you would need to visit October - March which isn't good camping weather. I would recommend June/July to visit beautiful long sunny days (lots of mossies). How long were you thinking of visiting and what sort of things did you want to do?
