Lake Lucerne is where my grandmother was born, it is stunning.
We are stopping in the Freiburg district on the way down. Last year we stayed in Nimburg Bottingen last year in a really pretty boutique hotel.
This year we are staying across the border in France in Eguisheim. We try not to pitch the first and last night, so that we can 'hit the road' early with no packing up to do and a hearty breakfast to set us up for the day.

Only 2 more sleeps and we'll be on board the Pride of Brugges!

Try the Chateau Lafitte in the Brasserie. Two bottles of that got us really in holiday mode last Thursday

Bon voyage

We may well do that Mike...although we've got a couple of bottles of 'Fizz' gifted for singing at a wedding a few weeks ago, and I got a bottle when I left my former department last week. I guess we can save it for another time. I do hope the menu has been updated in the Brasserie.

I'll be having a decent shot of Brandy to make me sleep I think.

Soo exiting, we'll be getting the gear out tonight, lets hope the rain holds off while we pack the car.

I hope Annecy is as beautiful as ever. You may catch a concert/ recital in the chateau...its a lovely experience.

Firework display tonight from Talloires whilst we watch from the Duingt side

MN everyone:
Ai Bosconi in Caslano - dreadful

Molinzanno , Agno - worse.

A truly BAD experience. WILL NEVER recommend wither of these to anyone. No redeeming features.
If Molinzanno were a bit more discerning and applied stricter rules then perhaps yes. This site made Phoenix Nights looked like a night at the opera. Chavtastic!!!!!

oh dear!

in my experience the italians dont really do camping, i have stayed at some really rough sites in italy.

best i stayed at, which was ok, was in sorico where Au Lac De Como is on google maps, not sure what the camp site was called.

when i mentioned the state of affairs to an Italian agent he said that "in Italy camping and carravaning is seen as a poor mans holiday" "if you cant afford a holiday home" which most seem to have.

i have stayed at some shocking camp sites all over europe
whan on my motorbike, because i didnt book ahead and took what i could find. worst was "camping buggi internatonal" in Savona closely followed by "camping Nonsard" near Metz France. both appear to have been closed now....which is hardly surprising.

Its as though most of these sites haven't been updated for years, and they don'tr seem to get the idea of assigned pitches.

France is way, way ahead all round.

The thing is a caravan can't get on to many of the sites we go to because we choose remote, small sites.

What I found odd was the way the tariffs are costed. You pay:

Per person
The tent
The car

All separate. Many of the campsites we were on had cyclists, so they only have tiny tents and don't take up much space.

I do love Italy and it won't out me off, we just have to set our expectations a little lower.
I love the people and the food is divine.

looks like you camp in a tent which opens more opportunities.

before we settled for the campsite in sorico we turned away from 3 sites futher south around 'Dongo' because they were rammed and in 1 case the 'warden' suggested we pitch between 2 caravans. our tent pegs would have been under the caravans. the site in Sorico looked excellent in comparison.

when we stopped in the diabolical "camping buggi international" we also turned away from 2 sites that seemed more like a "trailer trash park" than a holiday camp site.

"Camping buggi international" looked good at the entrance, a nice stone gate house and a banner over the roadway with international flags. but what lay beyond was a horror story.

the campsite was terraced on strips of ground up a steep embankment that eventually lead to....the autostrada.

it was not possible to get vehicles up the embankment so they had to be left at the bottom and gear carried up. the pitches were stone and mud. at the top terrace there was a "scrapyard" filled with broken up caravans and cabins and a bonfire with half burned tents on it.

the pot washed were stainless kitchen sinks on adhock wooden frames with a hose pipe supplying cold water to a tap. the drain was the floor. these were randomly sited about the pitches.

the wash rooms were actually out door with doorways into showers and toilets. most of which were locked, presumably out of order. the one i did find had a token machine for hot water which was long ago rusted solid....so i had a cold shower, in the dark because the bulb was missing. the wash rooms didn't look like they had been cleaned since 1975.

the only redemaing feature was the site had a bar where an eastern European couple worked. we were very hungry and at 10pm they served us with food and drink until we were full on a terrace over looking the noisy autostrada.

i once ate pizza in a campsite at Cannenaro Riviera on lake magiore, we were staying in a hotel nearby but the camsite bar looked as good as any place to eat. that camp site looked nice at the time but looking at photos on google maps even that place looks a bit rough.

if i were taking my familly to Italy i would try to book a site through Eurocamp or Yelloh!.I certainly do when taking the caravan to France.

You nailed it...trailer trash sites. There seems to be quite a lot of these.

It's as if the camp because they can't afford anything else. Whereas we choose to camp because we love it.

As long as we know where to avoid.

If we go back to Italy in the next few years we are going to give Lake Iseo a try, it looks beautiful.
