Don't want to worry people but got pulled by the gendarmes at the carfour petrol station just before Ouistrem to check our doors for migrant attempts, thought they were just being thorough

BUT then friends of ours who were on same ferry got hassled and surrounded in their Van and trailer tent combo by 20-25 guys as they were in picking up a McDonald's ( the daughter and wife were alone in car at time and very concerned)

After the now normal security checks In the lines and into port I saw a quite large group of single men 30-40 standing on the mound behind port looking im assuming for weaknesses ( not boat spotters only interested in the fences and lorries ;-) )

never seen it like this in Caen before

So in the words of hill st blues be careful out there.

Yes we saw lots of them about when we stayed at the Riva Bella for one night. Gendarmes were chasing them around outside the site. Security for the ferry was intense, all vans searched, even roof boxes.

From articles that I have seen,especially in the French media, it appears to be becoming the port of choice for them now that Calais has, effectively,been made too difficult for them. I understand Dunkirk is having similar problems, from time to time. Shame about Ouisterham though,was a great place to stop for a few days whilst visiting the WW2 sites, but sounds like somewhere to avoid at the moment

We sailed from there yesterday afternoon, our van was searched twice, and all other vans, roof boxes and trailers were too.

We saw no evidence of people attempting to hitch on.

At end of June when we used that port, we were checked twice and they went into the caravan and looked in wardrobes, under bed and under bunks.

When we returned from there in June ,we were thoroughly searched ,and felt safer for it,We did not see any groups of people at the fences or anywhere else in the area.But thank you for the warning and we will be extra careful on our trip in September.
