France has taken a very responsible approach to these latest type of attacks.
Bordeaux has the army on patrol and the quay has dozens of concrete blocks at certain places to prevent vehicular access. Even my local town has blocked roads on market day with vans and/or barriers. Even my village blocked roads for our fete weekend.
When I first lived in France I cursed the abundant street furniture, now I see it as anti terrorist furniture.
I wouldn't be surprised if in the future town planners in didn't incorperate anti terror plans into their designs.
Our 'local' beaches, down in the Aude, have new bollards making long areas of the seafront inaccessible to vehicles, there are temporary chicanes on those roads which are accessible, making any sort of speed impossile, and on the beachfront there are armed patrols. Our village, too, had areas barricaded off during the Bank Holiday weekend, when there was a Fete, a Boules Tournament, and drinks and nibbles open to all in the village square - and two policemen turned up, whether by coincidence, or invitation.......! France has certainly upped the game recently.
One of the attackers in the Barcelona attack is thought to have fled to France, so keep your eyes and ears open - and look out for a Spanish registered Renault Kangoo van.
We had a strange event, back in July, on this smallish out of the way campsite, when there was a lot of kerfuffle, with campsite staff rushing about the site, down towards the riverside, and in the farmland to one side, and about an hour later when all had gone quiet, a person in a burka strolled up from the riverside, and disappeared out of the campsite gates......... I'm sure I mentioned it on here at the time and we never did find out exactly what had been going on.
