Hi, we have just returned from two weeks camping in the Dordogne and Provence with children aged 2, 3 and 9. We want to camp again next year either in Provence/Cote D'Azur or towards the Pyrenees / Costa Dorada.
Struggling to find campsites that have enough for the children (swimming pool, playground etc) but not too big. The campsites we stayed on were 100 pitches and 150 respectively. We loved having the river to play in when in the Dordogne and enjoyed the Verdon Gorge but didn't especially like the site we were on in Salernes.
We have a large 8 person tent and enjoy having lots of space for the children to play around.
We would either be driving from Calais or open to the option of driving from Bilbao/Santander.

Any recommendations on regions/areas/campsites would be great.

Have a look at website and reviews on here for Camping Felix de la Bastide at St Mitre des Remparts and see if that is what you are looking for. A fairly low key site with about 100 large pitches, near the Mediterranean, but without frenetic activity.

I would only caution that it can be far too hot down there for children 2 and 3 years old to live and sleep comfortably in a tent in mid summer. The last time we were down that way it was heading towards 40c and we had to run away up into the mountains.

I think our plan if too hot is to make sure we book sites with decent cancellation insurance and head north if required.
The kids done ok this year when 30-35c but it was much cooler at night (17c) so sleeping was comfortable. We had heard that it was hotter the week before we arrived. Whilst we loved the Dordogne we didn't miss the soggy cool weather which restricted activities outside.

The part of the Med recommended by Berriow is often overooked by people who go east to the fancier bits of the Cote d'Azur, or into the Languedoc at the other side of the Rhone. However, it's an interesting area to visit with some nice seaside 'villages' which retain a village atmosphere and some traditional village events.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

I meant to add that the site Berriow refers to is in the ACSI Card scheme, from the 24th August onwards, but the saving is small as the site fees go down to 16 euros per night plus electricity, after the 24th August anyway.
