We are going to the dordogne for our first week next year, just wondering which port is best Portsmouth to st Malo or Caen . Doing the overnight ferry.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
The overnight to Caen is a brutally short journey. Arrival at 0645 French time is 0545 UK time so the wake up music is at 0500 closely followed by the Please Vacate Your Cabins announcement. Some people like that early start to a long day's drive, but I like the leisurely slow overnight crossing to St Malo and the later arrival there.
Thanks Berriow , we do the St Malo every year to the vendee and agree there's no better way to go . With the Caen crossing it does get you into the port earlier. We were planning on driving to sarlat area in one go and towing a caravan.

St malo-Sarlat possible in one drag from st Malo as its good roads most of the way.
We did SM to lacanau ocean 3 yrs ago roughly the same distance mostly the same roads and didn't get out of SM till 11am arrived site by 7:30 with 2 stops (puncture on van getting off ferry and nervous new tower)

I would take the afternoon ferry from Portsmouth to Caen, overnight at either Bella Riva 5 minutes from ferry or des Cappucines 10 minutes from ferry. Then get an early start the next day.
