We returned from France yesterday on the 11pm Caen - Portsmouth ferry. About 20-30 illegal immigrants trying to get onto the ferry, wandering around Ouistreham. Two broke in to a motor home parked in the car park outside the port. They were removed by Gendarmes. Never seen this at Caen before. Quite unnerving. I would park up within the port in future before visiting the local restaurants etc.

That will explain the number of checks today then! We were on the ferry this morning having stayed at riva Bella overnight.
The gendarme ad security were checking every caravan and camper....plus most were being checked in our line before we got to passport control at Portsmouth

We had extra checks at Rotterdam in June. And on arriving at Hull when they even checked the caravan oven.
They told us it was because we were exiting the Shengen border.

Apparantly they are squatting in a disused warehouse on the outskirts of Ouisterham, which is why they appear near to campsites. Caravans must seem a comfortable way of doing the crossing!!.

The Gendarmarie recently arrested some Romanian smugglers in a van in the port area loaded with illegals trying to board one of the sailings. Ouisterham is now reputed to be one of the favourite exit points, now Calais is on the too hard pile.
