40 years ago we bought a site guide and a road map, loaded three children in the car and went to explore Normandy and Brittany. . No need to think about it   - just do it.

Both fantastic areas, Brittany is our favourite, when the weather is good it is the best place in France, and depending where you live, the closest.

A lot depends on what you want from a site, bars, pools and water parks, evening entertainment. We have used Camping Pors Peron, it has a pool and a stunning beach just down the lane, it is a quite site in a stunning area.

Good luck, you will love it.

Or Le Champ Neuf at St Quentin en Tournant, reviewed on UKCS, and also on the Baie de Somme so only a short drive from Calais.

We have found over the years our grandchildren have expanded the criteria, when they were very young it was merely a good playground, a paddling pool and near the beach. Now at the ages of what will be 12 and 10 next year the criteria has changed, pool with water slides, adventure type playground, near beach, wifi available, entertainment and a restaurant, plenty of peer company, some entertainment. My preference is a flat pitch with a bar that opens in the afternoon. We like La Domaine de la Catiniere near Honfleur but tend to use it as an overnight spot these days. This year am trying Le Comorcan near St Mere Eglise for the first time as it seems to tick all our boxes. I've stayed at Portland, Chateau Drancourt, Pors peron, they too are all good family sites. When you read the site reports be prepared to take some reports with a pinch of salt some people don't like unisex showers, toilets, no toilet paper, no toilet seats and having to wear "budgie smugglers" as negative points. To me they are all part of the French experience.

Normandy & Brittany is such a huge area - 57,000 km2. In broad terms Normandy has rolling hills & farmland and can be colder and wetter than you'd expect, while Brittany is rugged coastline and can be quite warm, especially in the South East around Carnac. But each region is made up of departements (4 in Brittany, 5 in Normandy) that are also very varied. We have had 4 holidays between the 2 regions and still haven't seen it all, a great area and very easy to get to.

I think it was about 38 years ago, that my Dad bought a caravan and packed us all up to go off to France with just a Collins Atlas of the world to help us find our way Thankfully he bought a map from France, but we had many a great summer holiday in Brittany and then moved further on South and elsewhere!
