Best way to arrive is by train. You literally walk out of the station to a view of the Grand canal. Its surreal, feels like walking out onto a film set. Also try and stay in Venice its self. Place gets quieter after about 8:30pm when most of the day tourist and cruisers have gone.

Best way to arrive from the airport is by boat!
It can be an expensive private transfer or cheaper shared. You arrive to a wonderful view. Get a coach or train on the return

I agree best way is definitely by boat.
If splashing out the definitely stay within Venice itself nearer to St Marks Square preferably with a view of the basin or canals.
Other must do's are a drink in ST Marks Square at one of the famous cafe's in the evening listening to the live bands. Yes its expensive but a nice way to spend a couple of hours people watching and chilling.
Worthwhile doing at least part of the Doges Palace tour.
Do get water buses everywhere. jump on the number 1 for a Grand Canal view and try and get up front.
DO jump on a water bus to Murano and especially Burano (pretty coloured houses).
Finally if you can walk for hours then just go and get lost. You only need two signs which you will see dotted round on walls - Rialto and St Marks.
Oh yes and have lots of gelato
Enjoy

I love Venice and have stayed there for about 5 weeks in total.
Please DO NOT arrive by Train, it is the worst way to arrive. Arrive by plane then get a water taxi into Venice, it is absolutely worth every penny.
Venice is the most amazing city, you will never appreciate it's beauty until you are actually there, it is breathtaking. No need to spend a fortune, the whole of the city is gorgeous, but would recommend you stay near Rialto or St Marks. Avoid the main tourist areas for eating and drinking, seek out side streets where things are half the price. There are lots of lovely apartments on AirBnB and Homeaway. Any further advice, just shout.

We had a bit of an italian theme last year. Our second visit was in the August, to Venice.
It was hot, crowded, stunning - and we'd go again in a heartbeat.
We had 4 nights in the 5* Hotel Metrople right on the Riva degli Schiavoni nr the water's edge with its own jetty and about 500m from the Doge's Palace and St Mark's. In its palazzo days, Vivaldi wrote his "Four Seasons" there.
For a triple room, including shared launch transfers it was £1800 via lastminute dot com. We thought for that property it was incredible value.
Highlights were all the usual - Dodge's Palace, St Mark's, Peggy Guggenheim's, cocktails at Florian's and bellinis at Harry's Bar, a gondola ride, private launch to Murano, etc etc.
Next time, we'll make sure we get to the Teatro la Fenice for the opera.
Loved it. Great destination, especially for a special occasion.
Some pics for a flavour:

We've 'anniversaries' in Venice in Feb .... wonderful 4 days ... picked our own hotel and booked flights ... not expensive ... water taxi from airport: brilliant ... we've also camped and waterbed in daily ...
It's an amazing city ... like living in an open air museum of art .... and then there are the galleries and museums ...
It's paradise, and, not yet lost!
Other great annivs we've had:
Prague; Nile Cruise; Amsterdam; Adalucia and Barcelona.

Venice is wonderful, this was our second visit. In fact this time last week we were in Venice.
One tip ...visit in Spring or Autumn. I hated the heat, the crowds this time. Venice has visitors all year round but its full of LOUD Americans in summer.
We stayed at Carlton on The Grand as part of a package from SECRET ESCAPES.
We celebrated out 25th Anniversary on Tuesday and made the night at the Pavarotti tribute in Verona our treat...in fact we had treats all the way round. Based ourselves in Volterra and went to : Siena, Florence, Verona, Venice and Lake Garda.
Kelper - I agree Venice early in the year - FAB!!!
You could always treat her to a few nights at the Danieli..Its only 13,000 euros a night!!!!

Italy is expensive Warbis66.
Away from the hot spots it is reasonable but we never ate out for less than £50.
They charge 1 Euro to go to the loo.
A Pannini in one of the services wanted Euros 4.50...nahh, not paying that.
We had a Gr8 time.
I would like to go to the Amalfi coast but we'll fly.
I feel France is on the cards, probably Provence, not sure yet.
