Decided on the spur of the moment this morning to book ferry to Santander for 1 month from 16th September. We do not know the spanish mainland at all as we always go motorhoming in France. Can anyone suggest places we should visit.   We like to walk and cycle and like both coast and inland in equal measures!!   Any suggestions would be gratefully received as its little more than a week before we go so not given ourselves much time for research.

OK ... firstly ... are you seeking good weather?

If so, then get the forecasts for all of Spain just before you go ... and go to the area(s) that forecast what you want.

The north coast, including Picos de Europa is a fabulous area ... sand over to Santiago de Compostela ... but much depends on the weather,

Madrid has lots to offer ,,,

Segovia ... the Andalucian threesome of Seville, Cordoba and Grenada are incomparable ...

Cuenca ... fantastic ... as is Toledo ... Barcelona ...

Its a huge country!

Thanks for your reply which was really helpful. Will look into the areas you suggest. Good weather would certainly be good!

A good first stop is Burgos, with an amazing Cathedral and a very good, flat Campsite.
Araujnez, just below Madrid is the Palace, often missed but stunning. You can get to Toledo from there too.
Boring trip down to Cordoba but was amazing. (There is a Motorhome stop right next door to it too.
We also travelled Seville, Ronda, Gib. to name but a few.
Take advantage of Aires sites with a motor home as the are really cheap and found many people used the municipal car parks for free overnight. ACSI (£14.50 for the book and card) give you pitches from 11euros. Don't forget the dog water bowl outside your van door step. (Makes potential unwanted visitors think you have a dog inside!!) A lot of the tourist info offices have maps for other areas. ENJOY

Thank you. All sounds really good. You seem to agree with Kelper on direction to take so if weather ok there next week that is where we will head. Ordered All the Aires for Spain yesterday. Do use them in France. Good tip about dog bowl. Always good to hear other people's ideas.

As you are arriving in Santander I would recommend you spend a bit of time exploring Cantabria. It's a lovely region of Spain.

Very true ... and I always extol Cantabria/Asturias ... especially the Picos ...

However ... the weather there for the next couple of weeks looks pretty wet ... so may be an idea to head south first, then, if weather improves along the north coast, to do that on the return ...

By the way ... my site reviews have plenty of spanish sites ... right be worth a gander?

caceres, Tordesillas are nice old towns with good campsites very close.
Caceres has a bus stop outside into the old town.

Toledo is also nice, again a bus stop outside the campsite into the town
Cadiz, very southern Spain is lovely.
