Camping Bel at La Tranche is in that sort of position - but read the reviews to see whether that is really what you want.

If you are willing to drive 60 miles further into the Charente Maritime then Camping Beausoleil at La Palmyre is a real possibility for you, though little known to British visitors.

We have used La Falaise which is right on the beach and you can walk to the Super U supermarket and also into the town where there are numerous restaurants.

yes L'oceano D'or is very close to both the super U hyper market and the town centre and high street.

if you like walking or are taking a push bike head to the end of the high street and on to the marina where there are plenty of restaurants and ice cream shops.

you can also walk or cycle to various beaches near by.

Loceano d'or is fairly cheap to stay at (compared to the Yelloh! sites we stayed at this year) the swimming pool was ok but cold and it did have water slides.

the pitches are not serviced but they are hedged in for privacy. and i got satelite reception when i stayed there last year.

jard sur mer is a nice town and i would recommend l'oceano d'or.

check out trip advisor though as its proximity to the town brings other problems like local teenage kids (and worse) who walk in to the site. i didnt suffer any problems due to this but others have mentioned it on trip advisor.

we stayed at la litoral near talmont st hilare this summer. it was a better camp site than L'oceano D'or but it was situated far away from shops and restaurants, we took our bikes to could cycle to things like shops and restaurants. there was a beach within a few steps of the campsite though.

Le Jard at La Tranche sur mer (actually at le Griere Plage and strollable to La Griere shops). Could walk to La Tranche but tended to get the free (air conditioned) bus to visit here and wander around.

Was so good we returned, did 2 years running. Only went else where to visit new areas.

Also worth pointing out that there are quite a few sites in the South of Les Sables D'Olonne. Sites like Les Pirons, Le Puits Rochais, Les Fosses Rouges, which are 4km out of the centre of town, so a lengthy (but nice seafront) walk, but do have the benefit of being beside a convenient bus service into the town. That region of Les Sables (La Pironniere) also has a couple of restaurants, bar-tabac, a supermarket, etc a few 100km away.

May be worth mentioning that Yelloh Le littoral has a free courtesy bus that goes to les sables, the plage du veylon and port bourgney they also use the bus for kids club outings on a Friday.
