Next summer we'd like to travel to the Black Forest during the school summer holidays. Our plan is to travel overnight Harwich to Hook of Holland then drive (with caravan) to the Black Forest with an overnight stop approx. half way.

I'd like some advice on the best route and stop-overs. We considered either driving down through Germany and stopping near Koblenz; alternatively through Belgium/France and stopping over somewhere in Luxembourg.

On the route planners there looks to be nothing in it but I have no experience of the areas other than a trip to Saarburg some years ago. Can anyone guide me on which of the routes would be the better option, avoiding major holdups and mountain passes etc!

Thanking you all in advance.

Steve

Most direct route from Hook I used to take in my truck was through Holland to Venlo then down to Koblenz & straight down the 61 to where you are going. It's all motorway.

This is just my personal experience: although a lot of people like the route through Belgium and Luxembourg (cheap petrol), aka the truckers route, I would hesitate to use it again (we used it from Calais to Interlaken). Belgians have a ..... curious style of driving which involves driving very fast up to 1m behind your car as if you didnt exist before braking. We saw 3 seperate accidents between the France / Belgium border and Luxembourg. Obviously the penny has not dropped.
Suffice to say on the way home we paid around 25 euro on tolls in France instead which was great value as the complete lack of stress extended the expected life span of Mrs Dent and myself by a good few years.

My pesronal choice would be through Germany - but as I say this is just my experience.

Just to add, some are a bit afraid of German motorways because of the "no speed limit" thing, but that is only in operation on long open stretches of the autobahn away from lots of exits, etc. The one thing I would say is to look a few extra times before pulling out to overtake anything in case there's a Bugatti Veyron approaching.

It's going to be a two day journey from the Hook to the Black Forest so just choose somewhere you would like to see on the way and stay there two nights to make the visit. Route chosen!

Our preferred route is also down through France to Chalons and then east to Metz before joining the German autobahn system. It costs a bit more but far better roads and quieter.

Many thanks for the replies. Yes 2 days drive. We are a bit constrained for time in that we have 2 weeks in total. Perhaps can do 1 night stopover on way down and a couple on the way back.

Was looking at Burg Lahneck as one possibility; partly down to location and partly down to ease of booking in advance through C&CC. Not sure though.

Steve

Thankyou for all the suggestions given. I think we will drive down through Germany and stop Koblenz or thereabouts. I'll start a separate thread about possible sites for a stopover.

When we went to the Black Forest, we stopped on the Rhine at Rudesheim, fabulous site an place.
On the route back we stopped in Luxembourg, cheap fuel but wasn't as impressed as the German sites.

we have stayed at Campingplatz Gulse Moselbogen near Koblenz twice and found it a good overnight spot not far from Motorway.See reviews on here. I would advise booking as each time we have been it has been busy.
Tokens needed for shower but good facilities.

Stayed here a few times a number of years ago - it was a municipal then, but not now, seems to have had a few improvements - very handy for Koblenz using a passenger ferry over the Mosel. When it was a municpal they spoke decent English not been since it changed. Site is Rhein Mosel Koblenz it was a good site recent reviews on UKCS are quite good.

We have stayed on http://www.knauscamp.de/koblenz a few times on various euro trips. Its a nice clean site, a bit pricey compared to others but with great facilities - including a doggy shower! It can get a bit noisy as there is a commercial railway line on the other side of the Rhine with trains running all night, and there are barges going up and down the river all night too - but I guess if you are in a van it will be quieter. We are always beside the river in a tent.

Another good 'half-way' point site is http://www.camping-buettelwoog.de/ at Dahn. Good facilities on site, and it is surrounded by weird rock formations. An interesting place to stop.

For an added attraction, rather than crossing the Rhein by bridge, you can get a small ferry at https://www.rheinfaehre-leimersheim.de/ to add a bit of interest to your journet!

Why not go down one way and back the other way?
Make a bit of a round trip of it.

Nice sites in Luxembourg,we have stayed at Diekirch 2 nice sites there.
Fuel is cheap fuel stations at borders! The roads are excellent and motorways free.
We found Belgian roads and motorways bumpy with some potholes, although they seem to have improved a bit this year over last!

German autobahns are good, some 2 lane and their lane discipline good, not many middle lane hogs on 3 lane ones!

We lived in Germany before reunification(have been back since) and have driven at high speed on derestricted bits, you definitely check mirror signal, overtake and pull back in as traffic in outer lanes is shifting!

Did 130mph in our Saab turbo on derestricted bit back in 90s. We were passed by a Porsche! At that speed you come up very quickly on slower vehicles
