Hi all ( again) is it worth a visit and can anyone recommend a camp that has access to public transport. Also has anyone stayed at Camping Villeneuve-Les Beziers its on Les Berges du Canal. Any suggestions on places to see( no beaches) into architecture and natural beauty, old towns, villages etc etc, Cheers folks.

There are some lovely old streets and buildings in Beziers, a canal bridge over the river, and the Fonserannes locks on the Canal du Midi, but overall as a town it's not particularly attractive in my opinion. However, Les Berges du Canal is a nice site, and there is a small summer market in Villeneuve les Beziers. There is a flower market in Beziers on Friday, which if you're around is worth a visit.

I'm not sure how long you intend staying, but this Itinerary from the Office du Tourisme.. might be a good itinerary to follow. It's obviously an organised trip which you have to pay but may give you some ideas for things to do yourselves. Add in the locks at Fonserannes if watching people making mistakes going up and down nine locks on the Canal du Midi would interest you.

It's obviously an organised tour, and you really wouldn't be able to do all those things in four days, if driving yourself, but it may give you some ideas.

I should have said, that if you're in a motorhome then you can find sites nearer to some of the suggestions in the above itinerary, rather than use Beziers as a base. There are sites near to Pezenas, Sete, and St Guilhem les Desert..........

The Aude, where we have our house, has a 'Bus at 1 euro' scheme where you pay just one euro per trip, and 'trips' can include several changes of bus, provided the changes are within a certain timescale during one day. I think the Herault area also has a one euro bus scheme, but where timetables are easy to find in the Aude, I can't find similar information about the Herault.

Hi Mick,

We stayed here some 5 or 6 years ago, at a point when the ownership was just changing. It is a very "French" site (which we like) and access to the pitches can be a bit tight as the roads are quite narrow. The site is on the canal side, with a small road running between the site and the bar, which is actually over the canal. My daughter and I were walking the Canal du Midi over several summer holidays and this was our base for that year. It is within walking distance of the village and not far from Beziers itself. At the time I wasn't a member of UKCS, so there is no review from me on this site, however, there are others.

My review is on here, we enjoyed our stay, and our visit to Beziers, though I do agree with Val that the old centre is the most interesting. I think it was market day when we were there, but I expect we missed it, as usual! We enjoyed the cycle in from the campsite.

Sete is a seaside town with a marina. However we try to avoid it as the traffic always seems to be bad. One trip we parked on the west side and cycled in, a good cycle path.
On the road out to the west of Sete, following the coast, is a lengthy beach area with car parks dotted along. There is a MH park at one of them, some of the others have barriers. You can't see the sea (any more), but can access the beach via a footpath/steps. There's a cycle path follows the beach too.

Les Berges is very French - we are often the only Brits staying on site. Those that do come are generally one nighters stopping off from the autoroute. We like it. We are due there next year again. The new owners have changed things for the better - more of a restaurant than a snack bar, updated loos, bigger boulodrome, motorhome area although it only takes smaller vans and has very little shade at the moment. Activities each evening if that is your thing. 6 miles to a choice of beach but the roads to Valras will be busy. Portiragnes is much quieter. Canal tow path is a walker's/runner's/cyclist's paradise. Don't knock me over when you pass me on my daily morning run. Beziers has a son et lumiere each Thursday evening. Plenty to see in the wider area - Sete to Narbonne

We visited Sete this year by boat for a few hours, having previously tried to drive in and got put off by volume of traffic. In some ways the back streets/shopping area of Sete was similar to that of other french towns. It was extremely busy there at the end of August. We did go on market day. I don't think it is somewhere I will rush back too!

Hi there, no worries about that. We will be there in October so hopefully we will be able to sneak in. We like french sites and french people so thats no problem, and we wont need to go to the beach( I have one in my back yard) .But looking forward to seeing the area. If you see a 6ft2 bald headed Aussie at the bar come and say Gday..ps Your shout
