ViaMichelin says Calais, Nancy, Basel, Milan, Florence, Rome - a whisker short of 1000 miles.

How long do you have? Do you need a quick route, or a more scenic one?

I drove there via Calais, Chambery, Frejus Tunnel, then down. We camped on the north side of Rome, Prima Porta, I think it's called. Cycled to the station and went in on the train. Did that for a couple of days, then drove back via Florence, Verona, Lake Garda, Brenner Pass, across Austria, then Germany and back to Calais. We had 2 weeks and it was a long way, and certainly wouldn't repeat the journey in such a short time.

Last time we went to Rome we took nine weeks and did many a detour en route. When going to Italy I am inclined to go through Austria over the Fern and Brenner Passes and drop down past Lake Garda. We have used the Tunnel de Frejus but it is very expensive, but might be cheaper if only taking a car. We stayed at Camping Tiber just to the north of the Rome bypass. It runs a regular free coach service to Prima Porta Station and then into centre Rome to Flaminio Station which takes about 20 minutes where there is direct access to the Metro system. Tickets can be purchased in the site shop and saves a bit of queuing at the station. If you use the Metro just be aware of personal security as the trains can be very crowded which provides opportunities for those wanting to take what is not theirs, I speak from experience. However don't let that put you off as its a superb City to visit. If you get the opportunity visit the Vatican, especially the Cistine Chapel. If you need a toilet look for a McDonalds, you might have to buy a drink to get the code!!!

David
