Thanks for the above advice, all gratefully received.

ValA thanks for your input here, I’ve looked at the French summer holidays and all zones are off until 03/09 is this usual? Just wondering if that will make a huge impact on the end of August availability. We can always do DLP at the beginning of our hols, beach site for the majority and at the end of August do a bit of touring on our way home, booking site based on the weather reports.

Le Chant d’Oiseaux Looks like an absolute gem of a site, real cosy camping feel to it, that definitely goes on my to do list, thanks for sharing.

No, French children may officially be off school until the 3rd September, but in reality parents have to go back to work - and so French families tend to go home after a month away, sometimes just with mum for two of those weeks with dad coming along at the weekend, starting their holidays on the 12th July (ish) or the nearest weekend so back around the end of the second week in August.

We set of on our late summer trip around the 20th August every year and never book anything and have always found plenty of availability.
If you choose to do the western non toll route taking in Loire and Dordogne also have a look at the area west of Bordeaux, There is a big all singing all dancing site at Hourtin plague also some lovely sites on lac Hourtin and Lac Lacanau you have beaches close by although the Atlantic waves are not suitable for small children they are happy playing in the shallows and both lakes have great gently shelving beaches.
Most sites in this area are under pine trees but nice big pitches.
We return here year after year and have always had great weather. Hope that helps. I have also put reviews of quite a few sites in both Loire and Dordogne although we tend to be mainly out of season when it's quiet ended down.
You could look at the eurocamp website for sites with lots of facilities then I if you see one you fancy you could book direct.

Oh please do tell more about the western non toll route, thanks in advance

Thanks ValA for the above, we will probably do DLP first then

If you find yourself looking for a site in the Dordogne with good facilities for children, I would highly recommend Les Peneyrals near Sarlat - we've been there for the last 2 years and the site is lovely, very well run, clean and great facilities.
