I know it will be busy as we are restricted to school holidays, but wondered if it was a bit less busy like France can be in late August, or is this wishful thinking?

Weds August 15 is ferragosto. Italy goes mad in that week.

When we lived in Milan, those who had not gone to the sea or mountains, would spend the daytime inside their properties, with shutters drawn, lest someone should realise they had not gone away.
