I can see Dover/Calais ferry prices of around £80 return for car +2 people in May .. That's not eye watering is it? Or do you mean ferries direct to Spain?

What do you call 'eye-wateringly expensive. Are you looking at crossings to Bilbao and Santander? I've just tried a quote in May and got an outward crossing for a solo car for £185 and return for £155 on an economie crossing.
However, if you're travelling with a solo car then you can get more reasonably priced ferries from Dover to Calais, a non-toll route down to Spain with two cheap overnight stopover sites and you're in Spain.
Looking at portsmouth to Bilbao or Santander outward crossing mid May and returning beginning of July.Car with topbox and rear cycle carrier and 4 berth cabin on a cruise crossing was showing around £i000. Didn't fancy Economie when stated car could be on deck.We have done the drive down thru France before but were reluctant to start this trip with the extra mileage .Might consider it for the return leg depending where we finish up.Thanks for input.

We never consider the drive as 'extra mileage' even when going to Spain - it's just always part of the holiday, and we choose overnight sites in areas we like. We have even been known to forget about Spain and just stay on one of those overnight sites for the whole holiday because we liked it so much.
