Most people would go via Calais, Rouen, Bourges, Clermont Ferrand, Millau. Distance from Newcastle is about 1150 miles. Stopovers depend on how far you want to drive each day. Motorway tolls that way are about €100 each way with a caravan unless you divert in places to save money

Go to Estartit regularly, Camping La Sirena, we are near Manchester can do it in 2 stops, Aire Baie de Somme and around Millau. Like Estartit, think it's heyday has pasted it, maybe that just makes it a nicer place.

I am from Teesside and we will be going to Camping La Sirena again this year"
Because we are retired and not in a hurry we take out time.
Last time we left home in the afternoon and stayed overnight near Cambridge, about 4 hrs.
Next day we drove to the tunnel, a couple of hours. We crossed at lunchtime, then about 2 1/2 hrs to Camping St Claire at Neufchatel en Bray.
Next stop Salbris, via Rouen, Chartre, Orleans..thats about 4 1/2 hours.
Now you can take your pick how you would like to complete the journey Possibly a stop at Millau, then on to Spain.
Hopefully we will be there in May and September, a lovely place.

Hi, apologies for jumping in on your post, we are from Stockton and also considering a trip abroad for the first time, what sort of costs approx are involved in undertaking the same holiday that you are discussing, we have a Motorhome.

No ones mentioned the option of the ferry to Santander. Takes twenty four hours but its quite a pleasant trip and its like a mini cruise. I know it costs but it starts the holiday off on a good note and is less stressful. Also the roads in Northern Spain are quiet.

Geoffb63, you can stay on Motorhome Aires - free of charge up to 10 euros - or campsites costing 12 euros up to 50 euros per night. Ferry costs + insurances can be looked up on line. Fuel you can calculate depending how far you intend to drive. Food costs much the same as here if you cook for yourself, but the sky's the limit if you choose to eat in restaurants. Add up ! But everyone gets to a different total !

Hi Geoffb63, I'm in Stockton too, Grangefield .
If you go on Viamichelin route planner and put in vehicle details, it will give you the costs including fuel and tolls.
Toll might vary with size of motorhome, someone in here will answer that.
Get an ACSI card and guide, if you avoid going July/ August then one night with electric will cost between 11 and 19 euros. I think many if the Motorhome Aires in France are cheaper than that, or free.
We use the tunnel,and use Tesco vouchers to pay most of the cost.

Hi, thanks for the tips and advice, done some calculations, i`m afraid it`s not for us, total fuel cost approx £600 both ways + £200 approx tolls + whatever crossing we decided to use and that`s going straight there and back with no running around in between + site fees, will stick to the UK i think.

People usually go to Spain for the sun and whatever way you travel to find the sun it's never cheaper than staying in the UK.

In May can you find a UK site with sunshine, where it is warm enough to sit out at night, walking distance to a lovely town with pavement cafes, and walking distance to a beautiful beach, where the site has a heated swimming pool, bar and restaurant on site, laundry, bread shop and supermarket, for as little as 17 euros for your pitch, two adults, (outfit whatever that is), electricity and your dog (if you have one).

That's why people choose to drive that distance. You don't have to do it on toll roads, overnight stops can be cheap and cheerful, and you can choose the cheapest ferry route.
