have you thought about NOT taking the fridge and finding a site where you can hire one? it means the car is less loaded and leaves more space to bring the wine back ...
it also prob means your fridge will be bigger and you can get more in there, so less frequent shopping!
I also agree that if you can then try to plan outside of the main French holidays - early July to mid/late August. I would recommend the mid/late August slot. to get an idea of actual dates just look when the prices drop and go for then !! you can then pick and choose from a lot more 'normally packed' sites and enjoy a les frenzied holiday.
I would also not book too far in advance if youre going outside of the main French holiday period (dictated by school openings as in the UK), just have few sites chosen in different areas, check the weather and then book a few days before. that way you can avoid any really bad weather!!

Wow, cannot believe how helpful my fellow campers are on this forum. You've all given me lots of ideas and I am sure I will be booking a campsite soon. Thanks again for all your help. David
We found south of the Loire is the best temperature but go past Arachon and down to Biscarosse the temperature can be 'fiercely' hot and I would advise booking a pitch in the shade.
Regarding campsites, many of the sites around St George de Didonne can offer a range of different sized pitches. We did see a coach sized motorhome set across 3 pitches once and we gasped at the price that it must have cost. The size of a normal pitch I find can happily accommodate a caravan, awning and at least four gallumping great teenagers in a range of pop-up tents. Mind you-you need to check that you don't get a pitch with a pine tree stuck part way through it.
Good luck.
Hi all was thinking of same area in june, has anyone any comments and info on staying near Biscarosse in a motorhome? is the area good for spending a week on foot or public transport and can we walk to resteraunts and tabbacs etcs. Also what weather could we expect
Thanks debcon
