Passport costs are to rise from 27th March 2018. For anyone whose passport expires this year, it may be of benefit to apply before 27th March, that way you'll save the hike in prices and your passport will have the extra validity 'tacked on' to the ten years from when it was due to be renewed.
See here for details: (Martin Lewis website)
How are passport costs changing?
Here's what's happening to the cost of a standard three-week passport application:
How standard passport costs are changing
APPLICATION TYPE CURRENT COST COST FROM 27 MARCH COST INCREASE
Adult online application £72.50 £75.50 4%
Adult postal application £72.50 £85 17%
Child online application £46 £49 7%
Child postal application £46 £58.50 27%
Adult online bumper passport (16 extra pages) £85.50 £85.50 0%
Adult postal bumper passport (16 extra pages) £85.50 £95 11%
The cost of other forms of application are also going up, including:
Premium service (one day) – this is rising from £128 to £177 for standard adult passports.
Fast track service (one week) – this is rising from £103 to £142 for standard adult passports.
There's no user-friendly version of the full list of price changes, but they can be found buried in this official document.
The Post Office's Check & Send service, which ensures you've included the correct documents, that your photos don't breach any of the restrictions and that you've filled in the forms correctly, will remain the same price at £9.75 (on top of the application fee).
Renew EARLY to beat the increase
Crucially you can renew early even if your passport doesn't expire until 26 December 2018, without losing out. That's because when you renew, the time left on your existing passport is added to your new one, up to a maximum of nine months.
So let's say your passport's due to run out on 26 December 2018. You can renew on 26 March and pay the current cheaper prices - but you won't lose any time on your passport and your new one will be valid until 26 December 2028.
Even if your passport expires just after 26 December 2018, it may still be worth renewing early and losing a few days from your expiry date. For example, if your passport is due to expire on 31 December this year, and you renew on 26 March, your new passport will be valid until 26 December 2028 but it may still be worth it overall.
If you need a new passport, for example if you've changed your name, make sure you apply before 27 March to beat the increase (though if you've changed your name and already have travel booked, be careful, as the name on your passport will likely need to match the name on your booking).
Always get your passport, or complete your renewal, by using the government website, and avoid shyster sites. Find more of the best money saving tips in our Passport Renewal Tips guide.
Sorry about the prices layout - it looks fine in the box when typing it in but loses formatting.

Just an update on this thread.
I've just renewed our Passports using the online service.
Every thing is okay and easy except for taking a digital photo and using it on your application – it's a pain in the *rse.
You have to take an upper body photo, waist upwards, with a plain background (no shadows) in day light conditions.
We took pictures with a solid white background – stood outside on a sunlit day – to give the required 'upper body' photo.
When the picture appears on the application it crops off your body and leaves just a head and shoulder picture – talk about bring f*cked about !
I tried to use these photos but, despite a few more pictures being taken to get as good a picture as possible, it kept telling me they weren't acceptable because the light wasn't sufficiently good and the colours weren't good enough.
The light couldn't have been any better, remember it was sunlit, and unfortunately the colour of me was defined by who I am and was a reasonably accurate facsimile.
And, despite us both standing in the same position, and camera length, it kept cutting off the top of my wife's head.
In despair, after spending well over an hour trying to get it right, I sent the pictures as they were and expected further communication from the Passport Office having a moan about the photos.
But, no.
I received text messages from them telling that they'd had our applications, would I send our 'old' Passports and then they could issue 'new' Passports.
Nothing about the photos.
I posted the 'old' Passports last Friday afternoon.
We received our new Passports at 12.30 Wednesday.
We both look like criminals in a Police line-up, unsmiling and serious, on our Passports but at least we've got them.
Unfortunately the new Passport has a Red cover – I wanted a Blue one …......
