As I understand it you pay the VAT applicable in the country of purchase, you can't buy it unless you pay the VAT at the time of purchase.

Unless of course it is a private sale, I wouldn’t think that most private sellers would be declaring for VAT.

Hi, Nicepix ... yes, but only a link to another part of their website.
I'm away working at present, so won't get to investigating further for a week or so ... will report back when I get any clarification.

I thought that VAT was only applicable on new vehicles and used commercial vehicles.

The thread is over 6 years old so they have probably sorted themselves out by now?

Put an advert on the 'Free Ads' on here. There is a section for caravans in France, and I know two people who have sold through this website.

I never received any further info from the french authorities.

Guess they're not really interested.

We had an accident with the caravan, in a campsite, two years ago ... some damage to a Dutch car.
This went through our car insurance ... no problems.

This year, I wrote off our car whilst driving round Bordeaux (not towing) (nobody hurt ... just my pride) ... so had to arrange for two french reg tow vehicles (hired) to tow the caravan from one site to another and then from that site back to the storage depot.
The car hire firms knew it was a UK caravan.

Nobody stopped us.

Who knows whether we were lucky or not ... however, if your car breaks down or becomes unusable, it is obvious that a replacemnt tow vehicle will be registered in the country you break down in.

Glad no-one was hurt in your accident near Bordeaux. Useful to know you can get hire cars with a tow-bar fitted in France (just in case!).

Hi bofs ... yes, you can get cars/vans with tow bars ... but it's a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack ... none of the normal car hire companies do it ... both the towing vehicles we hired were vans ... one from Car Rentals in Saintes, and the other from a Van hire company in Niort.
Both took a lot of research to find!

Wouldn't have thought of that! Hopefully we won't need a replacement towbar, but at least we have an idea where to start looking now should the need arise.
