Hi, looking to stop over one night central France around 4 hours max north of st tropez - any recommendations ?
Where are you travelling from the day before? Are you hoping to get so far south from your planned overnight stop near Calais? This may take some doing, so perhaps wise to think about some sites further north in case you don't get as far as you think.
Friends of ours used to drive the whole way, from Leeds to St Tropez in one hit, but it took them up to twenty-one hours of driving (two drivers sharing). It really does depend when you're travelling. They still live there, but these days choose to fly backwards and forwards!
At a guess four hours travelling time from St Tropez is likely to be between Valence and Avignon - so south rather than central France. Google says between three hours and 20 minutes (Valence) and two and a half hours(Avignon), but from experience even years ago I'd say add about an hour unless you're travelling in April or late October. The last stretch is very tortuous and traffic can be very bad indeed at most parts of the season. Stuart's suggestion of Le Bontemps at Vernioz is Valence area - and there are two sites at Avignon in case you get further south but as suggested I should also include some sites further north in case you run out of steam.
I wouldn't stress too much about an overnight stop. If you are just looking for somewhere fairly simple to pitch up and sleep, then most towns and villages have a local campsite - often a municipal. Once off the motorway, just follow signs. Municipals are usually near a town or village, so you should also be able to find somewhere to eat. Providing you stop before about 17.00, getting a pitch shouldn't be a problem, even at peak periods.
By doing this, you can stop whenever you want to. We have often changed our plans due to heat or traffic, or even having totally misjudged the distance we can travel in the time allowed! Although we have been going to France for the best part of 30 years, we still get the driving times wrong.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
