From a previous post on here I have decided to use a VW (LWB)9 seater Transporter. My plan is to use it to go down to The South of France.
When looking at ferry costs it asks for the make and model, the closest I can get is a VW Caravelle which is the same size. Once I put in that it's a van the price goes up by about £50.
Has anyone else experienced this? An did you just book as a caravelle?

Thanks

Provided it has seats & windows then you can call it a Caravalle. Lwb is Just over 5mtres though & ferry companies usually have standard car length of either 4.5 or 5mtres & charge extra over that length.

It would depend on ferry company. If it’s from Dover then probably if it looks like a Caravelle then it is. I used to book my old VW camper as a Caravelle & go at car not motorhome rate. That was a few yrs ago though.

What does it say on the V5 logbook. If it says diesel car I would have thought it should be car rate regardless of make/model. There are plenty of 7 seat MPVs which I cant imagine pay more, but cant be sure as I dont have one.

Is it higher than the car height of 1.85m.

I have a car and caravan, and when checking Briitany Ferries prices,I put my Tiguan height as >1.85 by accident and price was higher than below 1.85m (even though we have a 2.7m high caravan attached behind us) - illogical

Our VW camper is just short of 2m high. The price for the Tunnel is usually only around a fiver more than a car, as you have to go in the high carriage. Never taken it on a ferry.

Its a known issue with their booking system, they always advise when you ring them that if the car is lower than the van to book the lowest figure even if you have a roof box taking you over the 2 m

I have eventually booked the Tunnel for our Summer trip and the Transporter is classed as a large car.
It has turned out to be a lot cheaper than travelling in a small car and trailer.

We've found this as they assume each takes up the space of one car, which equals one less fare. Bit odd, as it would probably be the same length as my old Grande Espace with 4 bikes on a towbar rack, which they don't charge for.
