Driving down to Spain and want to have European breakdown cover on an 07 Honda, wanting a reliable good one but not too expensive! Anyone needed to use one? Thanks

We have always taken out Red Pennant. It is expensive, so you may not want to do it, but it is one of the best. In the past 10 years we have been rescued twice, on each occasion a car has been sent out from the UK to enable us to get home. Our defunct one has been taken back on a low loader and delivered to a garage of our choice.
It only takes one major problem to make all the years of paying premiums absolutely worth every penny!

You can pay as little as you want, just 'google' but whatever you pay doesn't guarantee that you'll get the service you think. Everyone chooses on different criteria - will it do this.......?, will it do the other..........? what will happen if.........? If you're in a single car without a caravan what would you expect to happen in the event of a breakdown? If you have a caravan, and if you want repatriation of you, the car, the caravan, the dog, and the hamster, then you'll want different breakdown cover to us. We'd be happy to have it towed to a local garage, and repaired 'manana' whilst we continued our holiday in the sun - but then we're retired. If you have to get back to work after a fortnight then you need different cover to us.

I think I'm correct in saying that you have to be in the Caravan Club to get Red Pennant. I'm watching this thread as I will need some cover for the summer. I have to renew my Green Flag main cover in June so may just add European cover then.
Thank you everyone for your replies, think they all look similar coverwise BUT you don't know how good any of them are until you need them! Blueexpo97 what was wrong with the company you mentioned thanks
When we broke down and the car was in the nearest Hyundai dealer, whenever we wanted an update we had to phone VRD even though they told us they were on the case and would phone us, it never happened. And with a PAYG phone was constantly adding money to it.
Had a lot of hassle getting hire car through them.
Problems organising the repatriation of the car and caravan.
Then the repatriation company they use damaged the caravan and caused £7000 worth of damage. Now that was the cherry on the cake.

red pennent, i am sure is fantastic but you must be a member of the caravan club to take it out. so if you are not a member factor in an additional £58 to the already high premium.
my AA cover covers my car and caraven in the uk but....if i were to extend it to the rest of europe it would cost more and they will not repatriate my caravan because its export length is over 7m.
i phoned round a number of insurers.
green flag operate red pennent but will not repatriate my caravan if i take out green flag cover (only red pennant via the CC)
RAC arrival will repatriate my caravan but i would be looking at close to £300/year for cover.
what i have settled for is taking out breakdown cover through eurocamp independent. it costs me about £60 for a 14 day trip and i pay when i book my ferry. i dont book all of my holiday arangements through Eurocamp. they command a good discount on the ferry so you can book 1 night at a campsite and ferry. the rest of the trip you can please your self. so last year i had 3 nights, ferry and breakdown cover through Eurocamp independent and the remianing 11 nights direct with Yelloh! village.
i have not used the breakdown insurance in anger, i guess i have been lucky, so cant comment on its validity in the case of a claim.
as a P.S.
its maybe worth looking at ADAC. my german colleague uses them and they cover his car and caravan for the whole of europe and do not charge him extra to travel to the uk.
i think you can take out ADAC cover from the uk.
i looked at it but gave up because my command of german was not so good, there may be an english website though.

As has already been talked about on here, you cannot now join ADAC unless you have a German bank account.
