You will find that camping in France is ever so casual.
At reception you don't need to declare how many nights you need, they will take your details, look at your ACSI discount card, and maybe ask to see your passport (though I believe this is a regulation). Some sites might photocopy it, very few may ask to keep it either for a short time, or during your stay. The ACSI ID card is supposed to replace the passport in those circumstances, but we've never bothered with one. Some sites keep the ACSI discount card until you pay and check out. Every place is different.
Just look out for reception closing times, you won't know these until you arrive at the gate. If you arrive before 12.30 they are usually open, then might be closed until 3pm. Read any signs on the door, or ask anyone nearby. If the gate is open and reception is closed, go in, choose a pitch and set up. The Warden will either look for you when they get back, or you go and pay later. Sometimes other campers will let you through a gate. This is also ok.
