Hi we are staying 3 nights at a campsite right on the river dordogne just down from Limoges on our way further south. I’ve got 2 children who are 8 and 7 and we want to give canoeing a go. I’ve had a look for prices but can’t find any, has anyone hired canoes in this area and know roughly how much it is please. We’ll be there the last weekend in July

Hi. It’s approx 15 to 20 Euro per child depending on the length of trip you choose. Adults plus around another 5 Euros. This includes a bus return journey or outward depending on whether you start up river or not.
Well worth doing. One point tho is children generally need adult with them and they must be able to swim around 25 metres or so.

Also ... unless you are an experienced canoe-er ... go for a kayak/hybrid ... using the two bladed paddles ... they are much easier to use ... if you get a canoe with a single paddle ... you do need technique to keep a straight line ... else you end up going side to side!

we hired 2 boats and were able to swap the kids over on route a few times to make it fun.... this place is run by an English chap so easy to book on phone.
they drive you up river in minibus, then you just float/paddle back down stream.... not much paddling needed
They don't do kayaks (despite the name) they are all open top Canadian style or surfski type boats so dead easy to use - no experience necessary
There are two places that hire canoes / kayaks at Copeyre, Gluges between Martel and Rocamadour. The cost is around €8 per person for double seater canoes. It takes a couple of hours to cover the route, but you can dawdle and swim and spend all day if you want to. They come and pick you up and take you back to your vehicle.
It is a picturesque paddle and safe. Just remember to take the right hand side of the island around half a mile down from the start. Then when you get to the destination which is dead easy to spot as there is a road bridge over the river, you beach the boats on the left just above the bridge. You can wait for the minibus in the camp site bar. They do ice creams and snacks too.
In the same area is the Gouffre de Padirac which is a massive underground cavern. Well worth a visit.
Have a look at the offers advertised at your campsite too. For the last 2 yrs we've booked via campsite on arrival. They pick you up from site, take you to get your equipment and kayak etc then to launch site, they pick you up at agreed point on river and bring you back to campsite.
We like this because we can leave the car and enjoy the scenery! Comparable in pricing too! Whatever you choose, hope you enjoy it. We love kayaking and are looking forward to this yrs trip.
