Any suggestions for simple campsites near the D Day beaches please. Imminent retirement plan to cycle them and camp locally - bikepacking I guess

Perhaps start from the Cherbourg ferry port and ride 24 miles to the municipal site at Sainte Mere Eglise. That's where the paratroops dropped in on the day before the D Day beach landings began. You can see the airborne museum there to start off your tour.

I have never camped, but paid homage to the beaches on a few occasions now, and it has never failed to make an impression.

Hope you have a great time Sid. 😀👍

Our 7th trip to Normandy this year, just can't beat it for the beaches and so friendly.

Lots of little campsites along the coastal road, with the Landing Beaches opposite.

enjoy

Not sure if it is on you itinerary but there are some excellent sites close to Pegasus Bridge-
We've used Camping des Capuchins at Ranville several times, both as a stop off and for longer stays. It's basic, very quiet and very handy for the Caen ferry. They are friendly and accommodating. There's a restaurant in the village and a couple more at Pegasus Bridge.

Chateau Monfreville is a very nice site:

They also charge per person which is great if you're a single camper.

At the time of the last big celebration of the D-Day landings, we were staying on a campsite not far from Fourgeres. Couple next to us decided to head for Arromanches on the day, and came back very disappointed. They were stopped by police long before they got anywhere near Arromanches. Security was severe and it was really a day for the big-wigs.
Years ago, when we had a camper van, we did the Normandy Beaches and many of the war cemeteries.
My wife became very upset, particularly at the American cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, where an elderly group of Americans were openly sobbing.
So we rarely make such visits now, and my wife stays in the car in such an instance.
Bertie.
