I don't know if anyone else has seen this but if I have read it right there is a report in today's Midi Libre that there talks afoot to make this into a toll road, according to the ML more will be known by the end of the month.

Just had a look - yes it's been discussed but it appears to be along way from going to a toll route.
The reason the A75 was built toll free was to open up and therefore improve the infrastructure & economies of the Auvergne and Aveyron regions which were considered landlocked and remote. This has largely happened.
I recall prior to the A75 and Millau viaduct from living in Auvergne the remoteness of the region and the improvement the A75 made to the region.
I expect there will be major opposition and it's unlikely to happen any time soon.

Like everything else, really it all boils down to 'revenue-raising' and at the end of the day if the finances don't stack up then it will become a toll road. It appears that it will depend on (effectively) number plate recognition so it may ultimately be that 'locals' with appropriate dpartemental car registration numbers may have free access - and everyone else will pay. It will be a shame, but we'll just revert to plan B, which is to use the N154 down to Vierzon, down the free A20 to Brive, and then follow the A20 on the almost parallel free N road.

As always Val a realistic and thoughtful answer. Why do we bother with anyone else!!!

If they're considering charges on the A75 that I suppose it won't be long before they consider them on the free stretch of the A20 Vierzon - just past Brive as well.

Having bought a house in the Dordogne I naturally hope this never happens, and would be delighted if a motorway or dual carriageway linking Limoges and Potiers was built.

I thought the rules in France don't allow a toll on a motorway standard road unless there is an alternative toll free route adjacent? I am not sure the idea of allowing locals free access would be allowed by the EU. Germany wanted to introduce a vignette for their autobahns but there would be a corresponding deduction in road tax and that idea was not liked by the EU.

Thanks David - can't think of a realistic toll free alternative to the A20 to Brive that wouldn't nigh on triple the journey time from the Loire

First 2 times we went to the Dordogne in the early 90's we'd overnight in the Loire then go A10 - Libourne - Bergerac as the quickest realistic route.
