I think you make incorrect assumptions about the majority of UK folk Franny but even with the charges made by the banks mentioned the exhange rate offered by retailers & some banks abroad is ruinous enough to make it invariably better to use one’s own bank exchange rate & any charges made. The offer to convert to £s is never for the customer’s benefit.

I guess your right Opensauce, and I have no doubt that folk who aren't savvy enough to get the correct card for use in France, be it Debit or Credit Card, would probably go for the Sterling option at the ATM or point of payment, a double whammy if the ever was one!.

We have just opened a Metro Bank account as recommended. Are there any things I should know about using it in France that people have noticed? We are off in a weeks time. We will use it to withdraw cash.
Thanks Latecamper

From what Val A says the Metro Bank card works fine in French ATM's but like here you just have to avoid the ATM's which charge for there use.
Will be using our Metro Bank card for the first time in France next month, opened the account back in June of last year, having had a N&P Bank account in the past.

Thanks for that Francais, will keep a wary eye open for charges.

I buy cash with a Tesco credit card from the Exchange place in my local Tesco. It’s usually a good rate with no cash advance fee and a free month before clearing. I then use a Post Office credit card for non cash purchases in France. Again, no commission and my APRR tag is linked to the card as well. It works for us.
