So our car radio works ok everywhere in Normandy,it's not a DAB.

Our DAB radio works on the Brittany side of Normandy but not on the opposite coastline where the landings are.

We have a little portable which is intermittent, we don't want to be tied to buying wi fi from the campsite as it is an hourly rate so seeing as Wimbledon, Cricket and Football will all be taking place whilst away we want to listen occasionally.

My son said our Alexa Dot might work if we use my mobi 4g network, has anyone taken there's to France?

Any suggestions be them hilarious or helpful all will be appreciated

Can you switch to BBC on Long Wave 198 - that works for us in the car half way down to the Med. Then it's campsites with free wifi to this I-pad.

In the car it's ok, its the campsites near Utah Beach, their wi fi is good, but having lost 30hrs last year because of logging in and out probs, I'm loath to pay 20 euros again for it. We used the tablet with their wifi and it was fine, but need to find an alternative radio option, cheers x

We listen to Radio 4 on long wave on the car radio or on a portable, and can receive signals right down to the road between Figeac and Rodez when it fades due to electrical interference. Otherwise we listen to music on French radio, which improves your French, and 50% (approximately) of the music is British or American and from the era we grew up in! (60s, 70s, 80s). I don't know whether you'd find Wimbledon, etc on there though.

We listen any or all BBC radio stations using the BBC radio app on my smartphone. As long as you can get a mobile phone signal it works fine. It uses data but not as much as you may think.

We can connect my phone to the cars sound system using a usb connection so the radio plays through the cars speakers just like at home.

To give an idea of cost, my mobile contract is £17 per month and we have never been charged extra even this winter when the ski chalet we had had no Wi-fi so it was on virtually all the time. I even tethered my tablet then and played the radio though it at no extra cost

We get UK radio on the satellite system, works down on the Med at Frejus, so would be fine anywhere North of that.

I connect a tiny wireless RF system to the satellite reciever, which then allows me to wander around the campsite listening to my favourite radio stations, with Walkman type earphones.

Now that mobile phone package usage costs the same whether in the UK or in the EU, using the BBC app costs no more than it would at home, even if there is no WiFi available. 3G (in my case) or 4G will pick it up easily. Of course, this could all change next year.

One potential problem with the BBC radio app when being used abroad is that sometimes live events like Wimbledon or Test Matches aren’t available because they don’t have the rights to broadcast it live in that country. I remember last year it gave instructions on how to listen to the test match when abroad and I had to listen via a web site from memory. It still worked though but I doubt if Wimbledon will as I don’t think they provide the same alternative for it. Just listen to Radio 2 instead

Yes, we (well Mr F) had this problem when he wanted to watch the F1 or touring cars or both in France. Can't say it bothered me, but it was his holiday too and he wanted to watch it. Can't remember what happened - think I offered him a beer or an ice cream!!!

I guess the original plan was to use a Sirius portable Satellite Radio, when the BBC shut down most of there Short Wave transmissions.

Back in the day, I used to use my little Sony SW1 for tuning into the BBC World Service, it worked fine in Zante and also Parga mainland Greece.
The SW1 was a brilliant piece of kit, in fact I still have it complete with Active Antenna.

Anyway back to Sirius or AfriStar as it was also known, I almost bought one of the Radios, they were a great idea, albiet that a small subscription had to be paid for the service, the portable radios had an antenna the size of a beer mat, just a pity the service went bust.

In fact I am suprised that the service was never resurrected, in the U.S. they have Sirius XM, satellite radio mostly found in cars but you can get portable radios as well.

Yes we had that problem now you have reminded me, we went to the official Wimbledon website I think and you were able to listen live to some matches.
