We listen any or all BBC radio stations using the BBC radio app on my smartphone. As long as you can get a mobile phone signal it works fine. It uses data but not as much as you may think.

We can connect my phone to the cars sound system using a usb connection so the radio plays through the cars speakers just like at home.

To give an idea of cost, my mobile contract is £17 per month and we have never been charged extra even this winter when the ski chalet we had had no Wi-fi so it was on virtually all the time. I even tethered my tablet then and played the radio though it at no extra cost

We get UK radio on the satellite system, works down on the Med at Frejus, so would be fine anywhere North of that.

I connect a tiny wireless RF system to the satellite reciever, which then allows me to wander around the campsite listening to my favourite radio stations, with Walkman type earphones.

Now that mobile phone package usage costs the same whether in the UK or in the EU, using the BBC app costs no more than it would at home, even if there is no WiFi available. 3G (in my case) or 4G will pick it up easily. Of course, this could all change next year.

One potential problem with the BBC radio app when being used abroad is that sometimes live events like Wimbledon or Test Matches aren’t available because they don’t have the rights to broadcast it live in that country. I remember last year it gave instructions on how to listen to the test match when abroad and I had to listen via a web site from memory. It still worked though but I doubt if Wimbledon will as I don’t think they provide the same alternative for it. Just listen to Radio 2 instead
