Don't assume that all municipal sites are at all similar either in size or in facilities. Some sites are just a few pitches in a green area of a town or village, but some are huge places with pools and bars. Prices reflect this! Prices can vary between eight or ten euros, up to fifty - and all on municipal sites.
Plenty of the smaller ones are closing. Found this going through Maubeuge on French/Belg border. There was a nice muni there but locked barred & bolted this yr which was annoying because we were going to stop overnight there.
It does appear that loss making small ones are closing & those in popular tourist areas are being sold to private companies who upgrade & increase prices hugely.
Which reminds me that in the next month I must have a wander round the municipal in the village where we'll be living.
I think the municipal at Cenac et St Julien is the only municipal on the banks of the Dordogne in the Sarlat area. The location at the foot of Domme looks very pleasant when we've driven past, and the facilities in the village are only a short walk away.

that site looks lovely.
Lucky you going to live in France. Is this a permanent move?
We would go ourselves but have pets and family commitments here in the UK.
Yes - we've both recently retired and the kids are 28 & 23 now so it was an ideal opportunity.
We're still pinching ourselves at getting a modern 3 double bedroom fully equipped / furnished bungalow with a swimming pool + 20 fruit & walnut trees in a lovely location for the same price as a terraced house in our part of Sheffield.
We just carried on & got to the campsite just sth of Paris at about 9pm. I knew they had a security guard who will let you in at that time. 380miles from Holland in a day towing. Never again. I gave all that up when I retired from truck driving.
There appears to be a muni in Avesnes sur Helpe so probably stop there on the way back. Theres also a campsite at Laon but appears expensive for an overnight.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

I had heard that many of the Municipal campsites are closing too.
We have stopped at several goods one and a few not so nice but it will be a pity if they close many of them.
