Hi all we have only ever travelled to france once before from poole to Cherbourg to travel the Normandy areas, this was about 10 years ago, but we have decided to be brave and we are booked on at  St Jean de Monts, Les Amiauxim just after advice on the best route from the caen port please we are catching the ferry from Portsmouth at about 3pm and we are planning on travelling as close to the site as possible stop nearby and book in the following day. i forgot we are towing a single axle caravan.

And also have a look at the Caravan and Motorhome website for currant speed limits whilst towing.
Interestingly it is not what you are towing but what you are towing with that determines your maximum speed.

If you are catching a ferry from Portsmouth at 3pm you will arrive in France at 9.30 p.m. that night and go to bed. The next day it's a 220 mile drive down the motorway to the campsite. Do you have a map?

Good stopovers in Caen include Riva Bella and les Capuchins - both are used to people turning up late from the ferry as long as you let them know in advance. As Berriow says, you then get up refreshed the next day and onto your destination!

Personally I would stop close to the port as suggested and get an early start the next day. Travelling A84 towards Avranches and then head for Rennes - Nantes - St Jean. If you don't fancy the Nantes ring road then cut off before Nantes on the N171 (?) to St Nazaire and go over the bridge and then on down.
Maybe 5-6 hours plus a stop if free flowing.

At 9.30 pm. there are campsites open at Caen ferry port to welcome those arriving. There are no others open further south at that time. If you want to "kill half the journey" you can drive until midnight and sleep in a motorway service station or a supermarket car park. I can't think of no other options.
