Yes I have watched the video, doesn’t look too bad but not sure if I should risk it for the views or play safe. We are in Zell am See just now, heading to Italy tomorrow.

Coaches go up there.
Rode my motorbike up it a couple of years ago. It is spectacular. But it gets busy. Go early. There is a roundabout before the restaurant at the top. It means you can turn the van and go back down. The car park by the restaurant at the top gets incredibly busy and has a very tight turn. I would't do it with a van to be honest.
There are loads of pull ins etc on the way up.
Oh it is something like 36 hair pins each way.
To be perfectly honest I would leave my caravan somewhere and do the whole thing unhitched. Its worth spending a whole day stopping and taking photos etc. There are several food places on the road.
Theres a very decent camp site at the end of the lake at Zell - restaurant etc.

Thanks for the replies, we are staying at sportcamp woferglut which is excellent (if a bit pricey) - fantastic swimming lake, newly opened indoor pool complex ( which costs extra). The area is beautiful with loads to do. We have only had four days but would definitely come back. The reason I am considering the high alpine road with the van is that it would be the most direct route to our next stop.

No problem with the road but your outfit needs to be very capable in both power and brakes. I have driven this and it is a very long steep up and pushes even solo cars to the limit for cooling. The issue coming down is the sheer number of tight braking points and the relentless steep downhill sections. Everything will get hot, very hot.

Yes I think I might give it a miss this time, probably wouldn’t appreciate it if I’m worried about the car overheating. Will take the A10 I think. Hopefully we will return and do it without the van. Thanks for the advice.

we stayed at the campsite at Heiligenblut, in a valley below the road up to the Grossglockner toll road -( toll about £34.)      The road opens at 6am (or it did when we did it) and we left the campsite in our 7.3 m motorhome at about 5.30am so we were really early.     When we got to the car park in front of Grossglockner we were the only ones there. We ate our breakfast watching a family of ibex. It was a beautiful crystal clear morning and we could see climbers on the mountain. We stopped at 2 or 3 places and then made our way down to Zell Am Zee.   We had to stop several times to let our brakes cool down before we could go on.   We could still smell 'hot' brakes for several days.    I would definitely not do it towing a caravan!
