Hi all well in a couple of weeks we tackle our 1st ever 2 week holiday in france we are off to camping les amioux nr st jean de monts. we are taking then ferry from Portsmouth to caen we are planning on pulling into a service area possibly about halfway between caen and st jean de monts although we may decide to stay over nr the port to rest up.
i was just wondering are there many toll charges on this journey? also to any of you people who have stayed in this area are there some places you recommend to visit and equally recommend to avoid.
we are a family of 4 plus also taking mother in law too.
thank you all in advance

We did a very similar journey a few weeks ago. We arrived in Caen on the late ferry and went straight to camping Riva Bella which is about a 5 minute drive from the ferry port. The next day we drove down to the Vendee. Basically, if you want to stick to major roads, you have 2 main choices of route. You can go on the A28 through Le Mans - Angers - Nantes but this will cost you an absolute fortune in tolls. The alternate route that we prefer is on the A84 via Rennes and then down to Nantes. This route is only slightly longer but has no tolls at all! It is a very simple drive on excellent roads with lots of nice Aires to stop at for a picnic en route. Hope you have a great time, we are very sad to be home!

Hi Bryan

I didn’t count the aires but we stopped 3 times, 2 for quick toilet breaks and once for lunch and whenever we wanted to stop, there always seemed to be an aire within about 10 minutes. The majority of French aires are not like British motorway services. The majority are simple picnic areas with toilets, parking and plenty of grass to put out your picnic rug. These appear very regularly along the major roads. The full service aires like the ones in the UK with restaurants etc are much less frequent. We never bother with them at all, preferring the ease and simplicity of the basic aires for a picnic in the caravan.

If you need to fill your car up then as you leave Caen port there is a petrol station roughly a mile from the port on the right hand side just as you come off the roundabout. It is a self service petrol station with card payment only.

We're in that area around the same time. We also went a little further south last year. We are getting/got the le havre ferry so a bit of a further drive but we went towards Caen/Rennes/Nantes and no tolls from Caens onwards (small one from le havre to Caen)

As for things to do, have a look at Velorail. It's pedal carts which run on disused train tracks.

We're probably going to visit a water park, there is O'Gliss and another not far away.

Last year we went to Nantes for a day trip. They have a museum for all things machanical, as well as a giant machanical elephant you can ride on which was pretty awesome. Google it!
