WE did Aeneid Book 8 where Venus sets about seducing Vulcan to make Aeneas some armour. Terribly sexy for 13 year old boys....and very instructional!

I thought my “shopping” French was OK, until I paid goodness know how many Euro for 1.5kilo of Comte cheese..........I wanted 0.5kilo! 😳

Once ordered a large (1 litre) of German Lager (weib pronounced vice) and was promptly served two large lagers so I felt obliged to sit there and drink two litres of beer. Hardships ........

They really should teach you stuff you might actually need to know in school French. I too did A level French in 1990 but a few years ago in France our car starting making weird noises and I had to try to communicate with a small local mechanic who didn’t speak any English as we were in a little village in the middle of nowhere. I definitely didn’t have the vocabulary for that! Then, a few years later my husband’s crown fell off (his tooth, we’re not posh enough to have the head sort) and I really struggled explaining things to the local dentist. She let me struggle on for about 5 minutes before telling me in beautiful English that she had lived in Edinburgh for 3 years! Still, school French did not prepare me for most of the difficulties I have experienced in France.
