Hi
We had a lovely holiday by Lake Aiguebelette (Camping le Curtelet) this year and would like something similar but maybe in a different country for next summer.
Can anyone recommend a quiet-ish campsite, by a lake in the mountains. We like to have a big ish town/city to visit (no more than an hour away ideally) and plenty of outside things to do locally - hiking, biking, water activities etc. It would be great if the campsite is near a small ish town for provisions.
If such a place exists somewhere in Europe and not too many hours drive from UK, I'd love to hear about it. Many thanks in advance

Annecy you might fit the bill. Supermarket 10 minutes walk. Cycle track to the next village and supermarket, bus into Annecy.

Check out Lac de Chambon - 45 mins from Clermont Ferrand; Besse, Puy de Sancy, Mont Dore, and slightly off the usual trails. Two campsites next to lake.

Whilst I will second Lac d’Annecy it will depend on the time of year if you want “quiet ish” as in high season that is the last thing it is. Off season it would fit your requirements very nicely with the cycle track around the lake, water taxi as well as bus into Annecy and around the lake. Several campsites around the lake or very close by. Photos to wet your appetite.

We camped by Lake Constance a couple of years ago at a lovely little campsite. I did submit a review at the time but it never made its way on to the list, not sure why and I will try again. It is called Camping Seeperle, Uhldingen-Mühlhofen. It is within a walk of two supermarkets, on the cycle path more or less for round the lake and a lovely cycle of about 6km to Meersburg. The downside was it was very expensive at about 40 euros for two people plus dog in July plus paying for showers. However the site itself was utterly charming in terms of location and appearance. Ablution block old but clean.

another vote for Annecy. There are campsites on both sides of the lake & A water taxi/ferry is accessible from many ports on the lakeside to get you to the town. There's LOADS to do in the area within an hours drive.

Evry other year we stay at Camping L'horizon.

Annecy has a huge festival on the 1st weekend in August, you do NOT want to attempt to drive to the town during this time as it's chaos :D They have a huge firework show which can be watched from 10 miles away with no loss of impressiveness

Thank you so much for all the suggestions.
Funnily enough we ended up at Lake Aiguebelette having first looked at Annecy, but needing to go in the school summer holidays, we realised it would be busier than we'd like. It does look absolutely gorgeous though in your photos though - thank you.
We camped just a mile or so from Seeperle on Lake Constance a few years ago - also absolutely beautiful.
Great minds all think alike it seems!
I'll have fun now browsing Lac de Chambon.
Any other ideas welcome!
Many thanks

You could have a look at Camping Schwarzenau by the Achensee in the Austrian Tirol. I think it fits the quiet ish campsite by a lake in the mountains brief. I would guess Innsbruck is about an hour away by car but check to be sure. There is great walking (no personal experience of biking or water sports but I have seen sailing boats and wind surfers near the campsite and you can definitely bike along parts of the lake path). There are also cable cars, boats on the lake and a steam train. Food shopping in Maurach or Achenkirch a few miles from the campsite.
