Hi all,
We have a toll tag but next year I'm thinking of bikes on tne roof. Obviously we can't use the 30kph tolls because of the barriers but can we still be counted as Class 1 with the bikes on?
Thanks
CC

In theory you are classe 1 but you may have to remind them at the booth

The automatic 'reader' may read your height with the bikes on the top, so check the Classe on the toll booth is correct. If not press the call button on the booth and just say 'Classe Un Sil Vous Plait' and it should be corrected.

Hi
If you have anything on the roof it’s worth checking! We have an ATMB tag. I belatedly checked our invoices from last year. Our ford Kuga with a roof box on has been charged classe 1 at some toll booths & classe 2 at others! We now have a VW campervan & this has also registered as a classe 1 & classe 2 (no roof box). Going to have to test my French & contact ATMB. Will be much more careful when we return at the end of October!

Fiona

Yes, sorry I didn't realise you had a tag - but definitely worth checking as soon as you get your bill.

Also there's no reason you can't use the 30kph tolls without the height restriction, these are usually on the right hand side and allow lorries to use a 30kph toll, we used them this year with roofbox and bikes. (ATMB tag)

If you don't want to wait for the bill, go into your account and click on "Vos trajets en cours".

This is based on the ATMB accounts

you can check what you've been charged online & query any wrong ones, they'll alter it to the correct class and refund you the money

Lots of 30kph lanes without height restricting bars on the left, too.

Fiona, we have a VW campervan and have never been charged other than class 1 (but we don't have a tag). The only times we have been charged class 2 have been at manual tollbooths, including the Frejus Tunnel. I did argue with the lady but no luck (48 euros 1 way - ouch!). And the M6 Toll, mustn't make that mistake again. And an umpty bridge in Norfolk, had to pay 50p instead of 30.....

We left St Jean De Mont in the Pays de Loire region and headed South to Lacanau in the Aquitaine region. Towing a smallish touring caravan with 2 bikes on the roof of our SUV. Knew nothing about ‘class of vehicle or Kph’ lanes so just rocked up as we entered the motorway and took a ticket. At the end of that we rocked up to the booth hoping to see a real person. Nope. Just a machine. Stuck in the credit card to be charged a shocking €36. Holy moly. Can safely say I won’t complain about Ireland’s tolls ever again.
Is there a way to reduce this exorbitant toll? How do you know where there is a teller at the approaching tolls point of payment.

There are very few 'manned' booths any more, but even at those with machines only, someone is available to change the classe of your vehicle.

On each booth the price to be paid, and the Classe they are charging you is shown before you insert your card. If the classe is wrong simply press the button, and as I said above, say 'Classe un s'il vous plait' and it will be changed immediately and then you will pay the correct amount. You can get reimbursement after the event by contacting the autoroute company, but it's a complicated process.

I've just checked the toll cost on Via Michelin and it looks right for a large car and a caravan. The only way you can reduce the cost is to avoid the toll roads.

You can check the cost of tolls in advance by inputting your route and details, remembering to tick the 'Caravan' box, at

I don’t know about the ATMB tags but the Sanef tags are based in Harrogate. My daughter had the problem with bikes on the roof going through as group 2. A quick call to the call centre got it sorted and a new bill issued.

ATMB are based in France. I have spoke to them before about a password not working & we managed to understand each other well enough however I found a template email & they have responded to that saying they will investigate. I did speak to Sanef as one of the classe 2 registrations was at their tollbooth & they were extremely helpful.
