Hi
We are looking at taking our folding camper to Germany, ideally in the Rhineland area, so near Trier, Koblenz, Cologne etc.
Many of the things we have heard about German campsites are that they are cramped with small pitches. Since we are used to French sites with lovely pitches that are at least 100m2 can anybody recommend any sites that they have stayed at with nice pitches?

That's a bit of a generalisation. I have seen some very cramped sites round lakes in the Black forest area and this may be true in some other vary popular areas, but I have never experienced it myself.

I really like the Rhine / Mosel / Saar region and have visited it many times.

The site at Staufen, in the Black Forest, is very crowded, so avoid that one, but we stayed (many years ago) at lots of other sites near Trier, Koblenz and Cologne, and on all of them had reasonably good sized pitches.

Don't try the Munich city campsite when the beer festival is on - we found one tent literally pitched up against the door of our (hired) motorhome when we were there!

We have stayed at many sites in Germany and like elsewhere the amount of space you get varies. Where the layout is informal you tend to get a bit more space compared to when the campsite is set out in a grid. Also units tend to be pitched lengthwise on a pitch rather than rear or nose in. Some years ago we stayed at Camping Sonneneck at Boppard right on the Rhine. Only caveat is that there was a lot of noise from road and rail. This is quite common in the Rhine valley. You could think about Rudeshiem where the valley flattens out a bit and its a nice town.
