Do we need gass in spain surely we can do everything on hook up. Jußt wondering as we are in france at themoment and never needed to use gass I asumed Spain to be the same.

Many people use gas for cooking in the van,and in the winter for heating. Like you, Sennen, we don't use gas much, but some people go through several bottles of gas in a season!

Cylinder Gas is much cheaper in Spain than here but you need to take out a contract the same as you do here with Calor etc and also pay a deposit for the cylinder. Lots of sites charge separately for electric usage by meter so it is better to use gas particularly for heating.

Repsol is around 13 to 15 Euros for a 12.5 kg cylinder probably half the price of Calor in the UK.

Have a browse around the local recycling centre in the UK for used Spanish bottles.

We have a portable gas heater, and get our gas refills in Spain - last time two cylinders cost us 26.50 euros. We share with neighbours, and if going for any shopping, or as we did, to pick people up from the airport, take gas bottles for other people, to make it easier for them to get cheaper refills.

If you are thinking about buying a gas cylinder from CalderValley you also need to get a Spanish regulator and hose to connect to the caravan's fixed regulator in the front locker. Some people use a Spanish regulator and feed the gas back in through the caravan barbecue connection. I've done it myself but not recommended. If the rubber connection pipe was to fracture it could be catastrophic.

In Spain.secondhand bottles are easy to pick up at carboot sales or buy & sell internet sites.

Why would you need a Spanish regulator when there is already a fixed bulkhead 30 millibar regulator in place .You only need a Spanish gas bottle connector and standard propane/butane pigtail

Why not just use the EHU you pay for, even long staying the electric is cheap as chips. I stay in Spain for near on six months and use about half a bottle of gas with my BBQ during the whole period. Just this morning in Granada I came across tenters who were using gas to cook, when I asked about electric they were unaware there was lead available to provide electric to a tent, and they were not new to the game.

It is sometime since we first encountered the problem but if I remember correctly a standard UK type pigtail will not fit either of the two readily available gas bottle valves that clip on to the top of the Spanish gas bottle because the thread is opposite way round. Special reinforced Spanish friendly pigtails are available in the UK. These are available in 1.5 metre lengths which enables you to stand the cylinder on the ground rather than wedging it in the locker box. Can't remember the firm that I bought mine from but will will rack my brain.

This has a standard uk type connection for the bulkhead regulator one end and connects to the standard red Repsol type valve the other.

I have an adaptor to convert my propane pigtail to a butane one. I also have a CampingGaz adaptor that screws into that (latter readily available across Europe at supermarkets, if a bit pricey)
I also obtained the below from Hamilton Gas Products, 028 9146 1111 enquiries at gasproducts.co.uk
Gaslow Jumbo Adaptor Ref 01-1671 1

In winter some sites in Spain and Portugal have locked EHU connection boxes. They connect your cable and read the meter. You are then allowed the standard ACSI 4kwhs.per day Any thing above this you pay for. When you leave they unlock the box, disconnect your cable , read the meter and work out how much to charge,
we have a fixed refillable gas tank and is cheaper to use gas for cooking and heating. It also means we can use MH Aires.

Why not buy a Safefill bottle? No more issues as you can take the bottle to be refilled anywhere on the continent with the appropriate adaptor. No adaptor is required to use it in the UK.
