Hi,
We are Carvanners, but have done Istrian area of North
Croatia - June 2016.
Understand Croatia is split into two areas and there is a section between of about 10 miles ? which is outside Croatia (so non EU). There are big issues with Insurance cover for your non EU travel bit through this strip - check your cover. Have a look on Map, or search for this well discussed point.
It's a long way to go to just drive straight through Southern Germany, spectacular Austria & Slovenia.
We did it once but wouldnt go / tow back (to Croatia).
Would suggest you re-post on the very active Caravan Talk 'Overseas section', lots of M/Homers on there and with Croatian previous. To assist - your question perhaps should be a little more specific as to your query.

Do it!

Zagreb is lovely, the nearby Trakoscan Castle is beautiful, the National Parks at Plitvice Lakes and Krka are stunning, Trogir is wonderful (and much nicer than Split), the Pleijesac (not sure I've spelt that right) Peninsula is delightful and grows lots of nice wine, and if you make it as far south as Dubrovnik, the old town and the city walls are a must see.

Can't comment on the drive there because we did it as a 'fly drive' from south to north (Dubrovnik to Pula) staying in apartments and B&Bs. This served to remind me how much I hate airports and we'd love to go back there with the caravan if we ever have a bit more time (maybe if we can ever retire)! We did see a few UK registered cars and motorhomes, as well as several campsites.

There is a stretch of about 10 miles between Split and Dubrovnik where you have to pass through part of Bosnia-Herzgovinia. The insurance on our hire car remained valid provided that we stayed on the main road, but we were warned that it would be invalid if we detoured off it.

Haven't been for 19 years, but did Slovenia and Croatia a couple of times. Istria is great, very Italian in appearance, food and culture. Also did the Plitvice Lakes and they were well worth the trip. Would like to do more, but wife now reckons it's too far. Ideally you would need a couple of months unless you travel every day for a week either way. Weather can be great even in April or October. Gets very hot and busy in the high summer.

We have done it twice recently with Caravan but took our time getting there, staying in Germany, Austria and Slovenia on the way back. We just went to the Istrian coast near Pula and can really recommend it.Lovely coastline, very welcoming people and great food. Lots to see around there. We didn,t venture any further South as enjoyed that part so much.

How much time are you thinking of spending on the trip? We've done it twice with a caravan. The first time we spent 5 weeks in Croatia and were able to travel virtually from one end to the other. For our second trip we had less time at our disposal and spent 5 weeks on the entire trip, a week to get there, 3 weeks there, and a week back. Like Lydiak, we went via Germany, Austria and Slovenia.

Even in three weeks we were able to see a lot of Croatia - Zagreb, Istria, the lakes, and Zadar. It's a beautiful country, with good roads and plenty of camp sites of all sorts, from vast luxury holiday complexes to small family-run sites. Something for everyone.
