We are planning on a camping trip in July/Aug, we'd like to stay at 2 campsites, one near Disneyland so we can visit for a day or 2. And the other closer to the coast and about an hour or so from the port for the homeward journey. We can't decide whether to do Dover to Calais, or Portsmouth to Le Harve. Quite fancy Does anyone have any recommendations or advice on either ? It'll be our first-time camping in France, we don't mind a bit of driving but will have 2 teenagers and a 4 yr old so less time on the road the better really lol .. any advice would be appreciated.

When you're at 4 Vents, maybe leave enough time to visit Fontainebleau and Versailles if that sort of thing is of interest ?

I think the area around Le Havre has much more than around Calais, so I would lean towards there. The coast around Deauville / Honfleur and Etretat / Fecamp in particular is nice. Portsmouth - Caen is maybe another option for you if you are more interested in the D-Day coast (from Carentan estuary to Ouistreham) and Bayeux tapestry ?

Personally, if I was going as far as 4 Vents for Disney, I would then go on to the more interesting Loire area around Tours, just 150 miles from Caen - but each to their own !

btw, it's Le Havre, not Le Harve, even if some people do tend to incorrectly pronounce it the same as the start of the name of the guy who allegedly shot JFK

Thank you madasaman I'll have a look at that tonight. Arthurdent that's very helpful thank you, I'm now thinking we will cross Dover to Calais go down to Paris area for Disneyland. Then across as you said to the Loire area and cross back to Portsmouth from Caen.
Will try to remember Le Havre but have Le Harve stuck in my head now lol 🙈
Now just to find a nice campsite, there are soo many to chose from !

Hi,
Camping la Vallee at Houlgate is lovely, with plenty of things for children of all ages. It’s a 15 minute walk to a great beach & Houlgate itself is a nice little town with plenty of cafes & shops. It had plenty of life when we visited in October & is only a short drive from Caen or Le Havre
