We are travelling to Provence for our camping holiday and wondering about using the car train to do this, has anyone tried this way and if so we would be interested to hear about the experience from booking, best way to go etc. Thanks

It used to be quite a popular (if expensive) way to get south quickly and I remember friends doing it. However, that would have been over 30 years ago. I didn't realise that the service was still available. What are you proposing to load on board? I don't know if they would take caravans or motorhomes.

Thanks both for replies. Taking car plus camping gear. Have looked at seat 21 etc and wondered if there is anyone out there who may have done this as would be interested in hearing about it.

We did this in 2014 Paris to Nice with SNCF.It was the start of our first long (3 month) european round trip to France Corsica Sardinia Italy and back thru France.We were camping and travelling in an(old) Mondeo Estate with top box.You had to drive into central Paris (interesting) to Gare de Nord to access the Motorail.There are height issues and despite a long telephone conversation with the booking office we still had to empty and remove the top box when we arrived .This train is for vehicles only you must separately book a passenger train departing from the nearby Gare de Lyon station.All a bit daunting but worked out well for us at the time.Not sure the expense and time is worth it to get to Provence unless you are visiting Paris .I think a drive to the South with a one or two night stop is probably a better option.

Many thanks to all. We've spent hours today looking at various costs, ways of doing this and agree with Judo, it does look very expensive so have decided not to do this way and will be using the previously tried and tested drive via a couple of nights stopovers.

Yep, looked at Motorail many times in the past, in fact the service used to go from one of the ferry ports, but in later years was only from Paris.

We are on the main campsite for a fortnight, and the journey is one of the parts of the holiday that we really enjoy.

We do two three over nights to get down to Frejus.

Armbouts Cappel (Dunkerque)

Chalon Sur Saone

Salon de Provence

This really breaks the journey up into bite size pieces, and we use the “Premiere Classe” budget hotels, which work out at around £25 per night.

Coming back we just do Chalon Sur Saone and Armbouts Cappel.

We’ve done Paris to Nice with 1974 midget as it was quicker than driving the distance. You have to travel on separate train and meet car at the other end. Ours arrive following day some had to stay in Nice overnight .

Yeo MGJo, there must be something about France and MG's, we came across a small group last July on our way back from Frejus, at one of the autoroute Aires, just North of Dijon on the A5.

Three MG's and a VW transporter, although the MG's were of the modern type, nice to see though.
