Hi all.
Is it advisable to book a stop over at a site on the way to Frejus (thinking near Lyon) or is it ok to stay overnight in one of the Aires at the side of the Mways. Anyone with any experience willing to share? Any info will be much appreciated.
Thanks

We've done the trip twice (From Eurotunnel), and each time have taken two overnight stops in each direction, staying in a tent on camp sites.
Never pre-booked. Always just turned up unannounced. Never had a problem in finding an available and suitable pitch.
Always in September, mind you!

Yep Rich73, from memory the Municipal at Macon was very easy to get to, not to far of the autoroute and also not to far out of the town.
We are tent campers, so used to pitch there for an over night on the way down to Antibes or Frejus etc, although that was back in the late 70's and through the 80's!
These day's as we are now in our dotage, we prefer to use the "Premiere Classe" budget hotels, 3 on the way South, and 2 on the return journey.

Ditto. You can do it with one stopover but, if you have the time, it's easier with two. And, we've never pre-booked stopover sites, at any time of year. There are so many sites to choose from and you can always find somewhere, especially if using the ACSI app. Why impose a target destination on yourself? Stop when you feel ready for a break and just think of it as part of the holiday...
We have done Calais to Macon twice on way to the South towing a caravan so totally do able. Muncipal site at Macon is good. If you look in the reviews i have posted our experience. Advisable to try and book in high season. We encountered very busy traffic on Autoroute both times as it was early August but managed to get there by 5pm and we dont go over 60mph and have 2 comfort stops including lunch break.
Some great feedback thanks.
Have any off you seasoned campers stayed overnight in one of the roadside Aires?..
Just thinking to mysfelf it kind of frees up when I stop and don't have a 'target' rest stop.
Thanks again
If you are travelling at a weekend remember that there are restrictions for HGVs on French motorways on Saturday nights and on Sundays all year round - and in July and August the restrictions are greater than that. You can look up the times and dates on line.
All means that the HGVs have to park up at motorway service stations at weekends, and so you may find that they have taken up the space for caravans, especially on Saturday nights.

We occasionally stopped on autoroute service stations/aires but only if we were driving late - otherwise we'd get off the autoroute and look for a site, municipal sites are found in many towns and villages. We stopped here on way back from Med - south of Lyon. https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=8657
If you’re looking for a site near Macon I recommend Ripettes. It’s not far off the motorway with pitches big enough to play cricket on, a really helpful owner, ACSI, and close to two supermarkets for ‘top-ups’ it’s certainly worth a look at
