Just collected my IDP from the post office, one for most of Europe and the other for Spain.
The IDP for Europe shows a C1 classification section, so no problem.

The Spanish IDP only shows a C section which states it only covers vehicles up 3500 KGs, ie there is no mention of a C1 classification.

I asked the Post Office about this and they said if i needed to drive a vehicle over 3500kg in Spain then i would need a C classification on my UK licence which would then be valid for Spain. I could not drive a vehicle over 3500kg in Spain even though my UK licence has a C1 section in it.

Fortunately my vehicle is up to 3500kg, but I thought i would post the finding as it may have serious implications for other people wanting to drive in Spain.

Interesting
I just went to get mine (1968) one to be told my passport photos were no use as I had my glasses on - and the assistant showed me the wording on the PO manual. This is interesting as the passport photo requirements allow glasses!!!! Infuriating as will need to do some more passport photos
Anyone else had this problem?

Depending on the inter-party talks, we may not be Brexiting completely. I have no idea how that would leave us regarding green cards, IDL and Visa but I’m guessing no one else has a clue either? Especially Westminster!

The green cards were free, but I won’t be spending money on other documents until I know we need them.

We may already be in France before we know what we need! What then? A period of grace, I hope.

We've both purchased IDP's as we may be in France if/when we leave, so for the fiver each decided to get them. I seldom drive abroad now anyway, but need to be able to in an emergency. As someone said elsewhere, trying to explain why you don't have the correct documentation in a foreign language may be best avoided.

I got my '68 IDP today, using a passport photo in which I'm wearing my glasses. I think the rule is "no glare" from glasses, not "no glasses".

In Scotland , we don’t throw money about unnecessarily (well Mrs Oxter does ) but even with my Schoolboy French I’ll manage to talk my way out of trouble. Remember, we’ve been reading gov.co.uk advice for months but the French Police almost certainly will have no knowledge of the.current situation, and maybe never will.

If you are legal when you leave, or too close to get new documents, it would take a terribly book happy cop to proceed in the circumstances.
It could be like the Hotel California at the end of the dealing anyway!

How about phoning the French/Spanish/German embassies and asking them if your present British EU compliant photo card licence is still valid you will be surprised at the answer

We are still members of the EU so our licences are acceptable at this point in the negotiations.
They will still be OK but post brexit in addition you may need an IDP.

Well the Spanish embassy says no change except to length of time allowed.

And this vote that has just gone through the EU parliament seems to support that

The European parliament has voted to confirm UK citizens will continue to benefit from visa-free travel to member states after a no-deal Brexit.

MEPs voted 502 votes to 81 in favour of the concession – provided EU nationals enjoy the same conditions when travelling to the UK.

The decision had been held up by a row at the European Council about the status of Gibraltar, whose sovereignty is disputed by Spain.

The rapporteur for the proposal, Sergei Stanishev, said: “This is an important step for guaranteeing visa-free travel between EU and UK after Brexit, especially in case of no deal.”

From the moment of leaving the European Union, British travelers will become “third country nationals”. But in common with more than 60 other nationalities, including Australian, Japanese and US visitors, they will be allowed to stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Renewed my moho insurance yesterday and mentioned Green Card - his opinion was most insurers will just issue Green Card insurance automatically in the event it's needed - alternatively we can print it out ourselves on green card!!!

Seems we have saved a fortune by not bothering as Bexit is never going to happen the way things are going! No IDP, no tithe test etc so more to spend in France or Spain. LOL!

Just taken out a new policy for my camper with comfort and asked about all the fuss over having to have a green card.
Their answer "if you look at your insurance certificate we have issued you you will find what used to be green card information included on the back so you WON'T need green card in the future as far as we know most insurance companies now do this.

Perhaps we all need to calm down realise that most of the government information is slanted to what they want should a future referendum happen (it won't at the moment because they are worried the result would be the same) and actually speak to the experts like embassies insurance companies who at least either tell the truth or say they don't know.
I know who I trust more
