Hello. We are travelling to Salzburg from Rotterdam this August ... trying something different! We are having one stop along the way and wondered if anyone can suggest the best route. Thank you.

About 600 miles? Big paper map on the kitchen table will let you pick the most direct route and use a felt pen to mark it out. Halfway point is perhaps Heidelberg. Worth a full day there?

An obvious route might be the A3 through Germany past Cologne, Frankfurt, Munich to Salzburg.. BUT.. this road can be very bad for traffic jams, road works etc..

I appreciate that from York, the direct route would be via Hull, but a cheaper alternative might be through Dover and across France/Belgium/Luxembourg - Stuttgart - Munich - Salzburg.

Unfortunately we have already booked the ferry. We will have a look at avoiding the A3.
Thank you.

Biked Rotterdam to Salzburg a couple of years ago.
Yes, the Germans seem to have redefined traffic jams, and they are specialists in poorly signposted diversions when there has been a crash. We spent three hours crawling through small villages in a massive tail back because of one. And the Autobahn south of Munich was a car park for several miles.
We allowed three days for the trip. It took all of that - even with some pretty speedy (90+) sections of autobahn.
Personally I wouldn't attempt it in two.
But when you get to Salzburg, do yourselves a favour and head for the Grossglockener Alpine High Road. There is nothing quite like it. its spectacular. Salzburg is lovely - have some sachertorte in a cafe.
Do you know about vignettes for using Austrian motorways?

You can never be sure of the road conditions till you get there. When we went from Rotterdam to Cologne, it took us twice as long as planned due to road works and no signed alternatives.

My feeling would still be to go south via Luxembourg and then towards Stuttgart and Munich. I'd plan on 2 overnight stops and arrive in Salzburg around lunchtime of day 3.

familycamper21. The route we always take to Salzburg is through Belgium Germany and into Austria. I can send you a route and map by email if you would like just email me your address to dvphillips14 at hotmail.com. I can do it from Rotterdam.

You need a sticker to use some autobahns and main roads.

We have just come back from Salzburg area to ijmuiden ferry, took the 3 most of the way, got 2/3 in a fairly easy day and that just left us 4 hours on the second day, there was a fair amount of roadworks but nothing that slowed us down too much. Did an overnight stop at a great campsite - Camping Eisenbachtal near Montabaurd, very green and a bit eccentric !

Glad you've asked this, can I piggy back on your query? We're heading from Zeebrugge to Bodensee area via 2 nights in Luxembourg on way down, but planned to head back up to Rotterdam via a stop near Koblenz, are we better off heading back via Luxembourg? We have 3 nights in NL before getting ferry so can accommodate delays but would rather avoid.
