Thank you keith2375.
As you can probably tell we haven't done this before.
Hubby has just had a look at the route you recommend and it does seem a better way. Can you recommend a site to use as a stop over in or around Clemons Ferrand.

Michelle

Or if it's just for an overnight Camping municipal du Mas at Issoire - just off junction 12 of the A75 - but will you really get there in one day from Calais? Respect if you do !

Camping Le Clos Auroy just south Of CF is a great site. If you intend travelling during peak season it may be worth booking,

Netherton thank you for your reply, hubby is hoping it will take about 6 hours from Calais. Is he being optimistic ?

I'd say you'd be lucky to do it in 8hrs.

480 miles in 6 hours? Means cruising at 90mph to average 80 mph. I would allow 9 hours with two drivers sharing.

Hi Michelle
The previous replies highlight 2 good sites. The municipal at Issoire is a really good stopover as it is very near the A75. Each pitch has its own water and drain. If you nip over to the other side of the motorway bridge, there is a large supermarket with a fuel station selling relatively cheap fuel. €1.46 for Gazole at the moment!

As others mentioned , are you intending to get as far as Clermont Ferrand in one day from Calais? That is quite a long haul, even if you stay on the peage all the way.

Depending on when your ferry arrives, you might want to identify some shorter staging points that you can fall back on if you get too tired.

We use the well documented route around Rouen, Evreux, Dreux, Chartres. Sometimes we stop off at Camping Du Pre De L’Eglise at St Remy sur Avre. The sanitaires are a bit tired but the site is OK for an overnighter.

If you manage to keep going past Orleans, there is a good choice of sites convenient to the peage.

Camping La Grande Sologne at Nouan Le Fuzelier is a popular overnight stop but we prefer to go a little further on to Salbris and stay at Camping de Sologne. Great site with clean sanitaires and an onsite restaurant. You have to drive down to Salbris from Nouan to find a supermarket with fuel, anyway.

Next, I would recommend Campsite Robinson at Bourges. Lots of hard-standing, excellent sanitaires and next to a fuel station. From the E11, to enter the site you cannot turn left from the main carriageway but you pull into a little lane on the right and there are traffic lights to let you cross over. Lovely town.

If you still have energy to go further, there is a lovely municipal site, La Roche, at St Amand Montrond. Easy to get to and well sign-posted in the town, it sits next to the Canal de Berry. I found the upper set of sanitaires better than the lower ones, a lovely place to stay. Fuel and supermarkets in plenty.

After that, you are pretty well at Clermont Ferrand but I would like to make a special mention of the lovely Camping L'Aumance, the Municipal at Herisson. Lower pitches by the river and upper ones on a large field with good sanitaires. The fees will hardly stretch the budget, the warden will arrive at some point and stretch your French conversation skills. Lovely spot.

Hope this is some help

Thank you everyone, think we will re evaluate. We are away for 3 weeks so not in any rush if we have to stop over in France a couple of times it not a problem.
Wish us luck
