We are looking at doing a bit of a tour in this region for a month in the summer with a particular focus on rivers and lakes that we and our dog will be able to swim or at least paddle in! Is there anywhere we should avoid because of a very steep gradient or extremely narrow roads for a motorhome? Equally, is there anywhere we just shouldn't miss? We love nature, views, being near a village etc. We also wouldn't mind some sites that are good for a budget.
Any recommendations gratefully received.

On a positive note......We have travelled the Alps in an old moho many times and if you stick to the main roads you'll be fine. Annecy is lovely but busy, we once stayed on a lakeside campsite in a place called Corps which was lovely- I reviewed it on here. The Route Napoleon follows an easier route through French Alps south.

Thank you mismally I have earmarked that site - looks great. And thank you for advice about dog which we will bear in mind.
Any other ideas anyone? We do like sites where you can see you are somewher different/spectacular even when just sitting on your pitch! We loved the Tarn area for this and whole we loved Provence, some of our sites could have been anywhere as no mountain/gorges/rivers to enjoy views of from pitch.

If you are going down that far, I would go and see your vet about an injection against Leishmaniasis.
Whilst we were in the Ardeche last year four dogs died close to where we stopped after paddling in the river.
Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by a parasite called Leishmania infantum, which is transmitted by sand flies.
We use Advantix to repel sand flies. Said to work for up to 4 weeks.
I think that blue-green algae is the thing to be aware of in rivers etc.
I would have thought that high in the Alps sand flies are rather rare, and that in rivers where dare devil white water rafting takes place blue- green algae don't stand a chance of survival.

The dog deaths were thought to be due to breakdown of blue/green algae (cyanoacteria) in the river not to Leishmaniasis which is transmitted by sandflies. But it is worth having the vaccination against Leishmaniasis for holidays with dogs in the south of France. We were stopped from bathing in the Ardeche in 2016 because of levels of bacteria/algae in the river. Always have a look at the colour of water before allowing your dog in - if it looks strangely green or blue, or is at all stagnant, then keep the dog out.
Edited in late - this was in the River Ardeche and we were warned not to swim by a lifeguard on the stretch of beach near the Pont d'Arc. In areas where there are no lifeguards just be aware of the quality of the water for yourself as well as your dog.
Thanks Val we will check the colour and have had dog vaccinated against this. Any recommendations of places or sites? We first discovered the Tarn through your discussions and will be including that in this trip. Not just Alps we are interested in.
